Not going to lie, really disappointed in Gamma Phi here. I know they're a new chapter but their members aren't new to the concept of academics. Maybe colonizing took up a lot of their time/effort and the girls couldn't focus on academics as much but no matter what they're dealing with, academics really should be a top priority ladies. I know that the difference in GPA is not much but dead last their first year is not good.
Not letting the other houses off the hook too, DG, ZTA, and SK are constantly ranked in the bottom for GPAs (based on the last few spring reports), so even though it only differs by a small amount, it obviously is slightly reflective of the chapters as they are constantly ranked as having the lowest GPAs. If the GPAs were too close to matter, the list would be switched up every semester to seem almost random, but there are definitely trends here.

This is something I have some knowledge about and it may be unpopular to say, but a low GPA is not uncommon for a new chapter. There are a lot of very pretty girls released immediately during rush, due purely to poor grades. Established chapters know these girls are a liability not only to their overall GPA, but to their future...poor students don't make for stable membership. Due to grades, these girls would normally have no shot of going Greek.
A first pledge class of a new chapter is made up of a lot of girls that were either dropped from rush or dropped out of rush. This is not a slight. It is a fact, and it is the case for all brand new chapters anywhere that recruit for the first time after formal rush.
When a new chapter recruits, they want the first pledge class to look as good as possible. It is a huge priority. An unattractive first pledge class can sink a chapter quicker than anything. It is not unusual to make atypical allowances for poorer grades in exchange for being able to bring in an attactive new member. Same reason they will bring in some upperclassmen. If they are attractive/accomplished it can be worth it, even though they won't be longtime members. It is about first impressions, and it is risky. Is it superficial? Yes. Can it backfire? Yes. These are some of the risks taken in establishing a new chapter anywhere. Again, this is not meant to be a slam. You will likely see something very similar when Alpha Phi gets here.
