does being a legacy and getting recs matter?

How much weight does being a legacy carry?
Is it helpful to get letters of recommendation? If so, how helpful is it, and is it best to get a letter from alumnae rather than current college students in that chapter?

Getting an actually bid really depends on the house, but no matter the house if you are a true legacy (mom, grandma, or sister) you will make it past the first day unless there are other circumstances at play. Some houses have to have a really really good reason to drop you, and even have to speak with your family member to explain why you didn't get a bid... again it depends on the house.
As far as letters of rec. they don't hurt but aren't a deal breaker like they are at bigger schools... they help us know what kind of girls you would enjoy talking to, and what your interests are. WAY better to get recs from an Alumna vs a student in the chapter.... at least with my house we wouldn't really put much weight on recs from current students (other than knowing who to pair you with during rush)... again this could differ based on the house.
