petition for greek row & greek housing
by: James Jonathan
Let's all take a second to be honest with ourselves here, Greek Life at Rowan is a Joke. We're a D3 frat party school with popup-chapter houses all over the Boro. There is nothing highly prestigious about our greek life system, its grungy and sloppy, forced underground by university and city policy. In my opinion it is merely 'decriminalized', meaning greek life is allowed to exist in a public institution under 1st amendment freedom to organize, but is not actively supported by the university to thrive and prosper.
A greek row once existed down main street. Some of it remains with the current DKE, AEPhi and FIJI houses, the other side of the street and former greek neighborhood was demolished to build RoBo apartments. If Rowan wants to become a D1 school they need to rebuild and have better control over greek life's presence on campus. A greek row and university owned greek housing is how you do it. You can look as Drexel as a good example of this system.
Another issue which prevents Greek Row & Greek Housing is a Glassboro City ordinance which prevents 'commercial signage' and 'exterior writing/displays on residential properties". This ordinance is basically to avoid advertising and commercialization in residential districts. This prohibits lettering houses, raising a flag or putting a 'church style' board on your property. To appeal this ordinance is crucial to achieve proper Greek housing, unless Rowan university could buy property and have it included in Rowan Campus

Greek Life in the State of New Jersey SUCKS!!!! State and Private schools DO NOT care about Greek Life. They would rather build more apartment like dorms on campus rather than a Greek Village. Rutgers is the only school that may have a decent Greek Life in NJ but in comparison to other Big Ten Schools, they are the bottom of the barrel. If you want to experience real Greek Life, my suggestion is to transfer to either a Big Ten School like Michigan, Indiana, Purdue, Ohio State, etc, or a SEC school like Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Texas, Missouri, etc. Sorry but NJ does NOT cut it with Greek Life.
