Your first mistake is adopting the generalizations of others and making them your reality. What you need to do is get to know as many organizations as possible, and see where you feel at home. Allowing your opinion to be manipulated changes the way you'd approach certain people, and the way you approach people could put them off, making it a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Basically, just think for yourself. You'll be fine.
