Greek Life tried to open for expansion, but the only organization interested immediately dropped out when they found out no housing was available.

There are 10 really great sororities on campus right now. Idk why they'd want to start another so soon, not really necessary.

not sure why they'd be hurrying to start another chapter. There aren't dozens of girls not getting bids. And really, sorority members want to live in their chapter house for a year or two then move down the line. If someone was pushing to start a colony, I'd wonder why they didn't see themselves in one of the 10 sororities already here.

I think a new sorority or even two here would be great. It's hard taking in a pledge class of 50/60 that all have respect for the chapter

Having big pledge classes is normal for a lot of chapters around the country, and they teach and initiate their members just fine. Sororities at URI will need to change the way they do some stuff. Panhel shouldn't be talking about expansion until they've seen if these recruitment numbers stay consistent. It wasn't that long ago that several houses were struggling to fill their houses. There also shouldn't be a need for most houses to COB in the spring if numbers are stable.

Yeah...So you expect that to change overnight? You'd rather bring another (or two) organizations on campus to compete when no one knows if these numbers will sustain themselves? It would be smarter for the existing houses and panhel to change and grow with the numbers in a way that secures the future of the 10 houses that are already here, rather than looking for the next new thing.

Anyways, AXO will want to come back and recolonize when their 5 year suspension is up.

You bring up a great point about AXO^. They WILL want to come back and that will bring the sorority chapter number up.

As a third party observer, I say there is a need for maybe one more sorority based on the current climate, considering how many girls arbitrarily get the ax on bids due to headcount limitations. But...with AXO inevitably returning there's probably no point in expansion.

This person is absolutely right. No one is getting cut arbitrarily, it's usually because they don't want to be in a certain house, but aren't "right" to be in the house they want (reality check). If PNMs follow the process, they are nearly guaranteed a bid in formal rush.

Well I'll be damned. I wasn't exactly aware of all this. I just know more than one girl that had an abysmal experience for spring rush, and they are really strong in their academics as well as philanthropy.

Also, rushing "enough" houses isn't as easy as you say, because the sororities had overlapping open houses and forced girls to choose, rather than explore all options. Combine that with only having so much free time and your system isn't exactly all-encompassing.

Just being constructive.

Alpha Chi won't be able to recolonize until after at least 2018 or 2019...and that's if their alumni are motivated, and their nationals is open re chartering. Not a given.

Comparing Spring informal recruitment and fall formal recruitment is comparing apples and oranges. And I agree panhel could have done a better job getting the informal parties lined up so they allowed for more opportunity to see other houses...BUT they are not required to. COB is not required to be structured or organized like formal recruitment (that's NPC rules, not URI).

In the fall everyone has to go to every house, on schedule. What has happened in the past is girls rushing in the fall didn't like who they got invited back to for second round, so they'd drop out, or at the end only list one house on their pref card. Last year there was a big turnaround, and MANY more girls got placed because they were more open minded.

I'm sure your friends are great candidates. Most of the houses that rushed girls last spring had to decline girls they would have loved to take. In the spring there's no quota, you can only bid up to the set campus ceiling. those women, hopefully, will participate in fall rush and almost definitely get bids.

Thanks for the clarification. I learned a lot that I can tell sorority PNMs for the future.

How are you a "third party observer"? Are you an independent, or a guy?

That only happens because some girls decide they have to be in a top house or none at all so they decline everything else.

Over 600 went to open house
less than 15 were dropped from all houses during rounds
2 or 3 received no bids (but who knows they could have only written one house down hurting their chances at getting a bid)
so roughly 3%...that is not a lot (I realize people feelings where hurt though)

The next house that comes on will be voted on, as in the committee could vote for another house over axo(they don't just magically come back on). It also goes through another series of voting.
