can you switch frats?

by:

I rushed last year and became a bro of a frat. But the way pledging was done, I was kept from
Meeting all the tools and geeds that were already bro's. now I hate the frat and the fact that I'm a brother hurts my personal reputation. Is it at all possible for me to drop my current frat and join another? How does that work?

Which frat? Were you initiated? If you joined one of the new frats that are only colonies (sae, sig ep, aepi) then you can drop anytime because none of them have been actually initiated yet. But if you were initiated into any of the other ones your kinda stuck.

First off, please stop referring to the Fraternity as a "frat"---it's like fingernails on a chalkboard. The Fraternal experience will set you up with and foster life-long skills and relationships, on the business and personal fronts. Yes, it is the best party-scene of your life, but also (if right house) teaches you about responsibilty to your fellow Brothers---and not to quit or whine. Make a mature inquiry as to what has happened and try and make it work--

The Fraternity is "Not for College Days Alone"----remember that, and you've chosen to be part of something for the right reasons...

Well the problem here seems to be that he thought he joined a "fraternity" for the right reasons but was mislead during the pledging process. This happens all the time as a lot of organizations do put on a false image during rush and even during the pledging process to make themselves appear better than they are. Not every fraternity is set up to get you furthur in life. Ill agree with you that you shouldn't whine about not liking your brothers because you should have put in effort to get to know them all before you committed yourself to it. That's this guys own fault. And also the whole its a fraternity not a frat argument is one of the pettiest arguments out there. You don't get more respect for saying things like that, you just sound arrogant. Frat is just a simplified way of saying fraternity.

You've just gone thru an entire pledge program and don't know the brothers in the house? It's not a petty argument or arrogant, it's just symbolism. I had the misfortune of unexpectedly being at a Brother's wake on Sunday, 22 years post my URI graduation and 60 guys turned up for it---THAT'S RESPECT my young friend, and there is NO VERSION of "FRAT" in the Fraternity that i continue to be a part of. It was INSTILLED in us all (along with many other respect items) to never use the word "frat"---It astounded me back then when guys at other houses referred to their house as a "frat", and still does obviously or I wouldn't be spending time debating the subject. This wake made me want to replace my Brother's pin that i lost years ago and was looking online for our Chapter's site and stumbled across this site and had to comment. I now have.

Unfortunately, the most realistic answer to your question is simply: no. Having gone through pledgeship and presumably taken part in an initiation ritual you've pretty much written yourself into stone as a brother of that Fraternity. Now, like others have mentioned above, the only people who have the power to "remove" you from your Fraternity would be your Nationals.

So, your only real argument would be to say that the current chapter lied to you and that they're misrepresenting the Fraternity as a whole. Essentially throwing them under the bus. Quite a douche-move, but really the only option if you're dead set on doing this. Good luck.

Good luck! But make sure to think it through before turning in your badge. Consider the consequences: the gossip, etc. But either way, your's choice.
