the coast of greek life

by: Poor College Kid

I really want to rush next semester (F16') but I'm concerned about coast of dues. I'm just getting by with financial aid and can't support an expensive lifestyle. I know each chapter differs, but what's the coast you pay per semester to be in a sorority? Also is their any financial aid in Greek life?

I don't wan to miss out on the experience but I also don't want to put myself into too much debt.

Each house has a different amount for dues but the average is between 400-600 a month (you also have to factor in cost of Panhel events and other things) but there are payment plans you can make. I personally am on a payment plan for my house

$400-600 a mouth!? That means I'm paying $3,400-$5,400 a year! And around $20,000 for all 4 years. Are you sure you didn't mean per-semester?

Yeah my bad mixed up dues and rent!! 400-600 per semester on top of rent (if you decide to live in the house which some chapters require) and there are other fees that you'll pay that differ from chapter to chapter!! There are payment plans for all of these!! Some chapters' dues are over 1000$ so keep that in mind

Almost all sororities are priced to be cheaper than living in the dorms too. Just the room and board, not dues.

I understand that, but how much is an average sorority? I want to see if I can afford it before I even rush so I don't get my hopes up

It changes from year to year but the average would be close to 500-1000 per semester not factoring in rent for the house and other things you'd be paying for

Each house is different, and I think the exact numbers are in the booklet that you get the first day of recruitment. But you can estimate between $500-1,000. The houses that are cheaper you will more than likely have to pay out of pocket for certain t-shirts and events as they come along (some might be optional so you can save money, some might be mandatory to buy). These things might all be included in the budget already if the dues are more expensive, which means you won't have to pay anything out of pocket outside of dues. Again, you will get the exact numbers during recruitment, but you can ask the sisters of each house how much they have to pay for extra stuff outside of dues during the recruitment rounds.

This isn't necessarily true, if a sorority is all inclusive (on the booklet you will get it for formal recruitment will tell you if it is or not) then there are no out of pocket costs... Some of the cheaper houses are all inclusive and some aren't, same for the more expensive ones. Keep that in mind because the out of pocket costs can really add up.
