Once you get a bid from a chapter it is up to you to decide whether you want to stick with it or not. Some girls are disappointed and drop right away, but the ones that stick with it for the most part will find that they can make some great friends and ended up just where they belong. I'm not sure how often people don't get bids especially since preference round this year is only two chapters, but if you only rank one on pref you have a chance of not getting a bid. Rho Gammas and everyone else will tell you about that. Don't be nervous and just rank based on the places that you have good conversations! There's a lot of first impressions that will really be changed as you go through, just get to know a sorority before you write them off!
