freshman year, way too many options
by: FreeFreshmen
So freshman year is coming up and I suppose I should check out some of the sororities before I totally pass on the (possible) opportunities. And lets face it every group wants every student to join them, presenting lots of choices but not a lot of information. IF I were thinking of joining a sorority at the University of Iowa, which ones should I even consider? I don't want to be required to live in a house. I want to be apart of it but I don't want it to control my entire life. So I guess I'm asking of opinions backed up by reasons.
Thanks in advance,
A FreeFreshmen considering Greek Life

I remember thinking the same thing about joining a sorority and how overwhelming it seems. I don't it is wise to pass up on the opportunity because I think you would be surprised at how much more a sorority can offer you. For example networking connections, academic support, and a place to call home away from home are just to name a few. The minimum requirement is going to chapter meetings on either a Sunday or Monday (depending on which sorority) and a few required events (such as philanthropy events). Although that is the minimum commitment, you can get so much more out of it the more you are involved. Going through recruitment is the best way to find out all the information you want about each house. Each chapter is different and so the answer to your question depends on what you would like out of a sorority. The best way is just to go through recruitment, ask lots of questions, be yourself, and choose the chapter that you can see yourself most comfortable in. If you decide Greek life is not for you, you can easily drop out of the process.
