recruitment/looks
by: OSU GREEKAnyone who believes recruitment is NOT based on looks is naive. It's a harsh reality and it further breeds the sorority stereotype of being elitist, self-absrobed, etc. While, I do not believe recruiting based off looks represents a sorority's values, as it does not, there is no possible way a social chapter can THIRVE without this style of recruitment. This is because we, as a society, base our "tiers" off of looks. Alpha Alpha Alpha, for example, may be gorgeous but have very disagreeable values. AAA will still be top “tier" and will never fail to hit quota and have amazing return rates. Beta Beta Beta may be average looking but raise an abundant amount of money for philanthropy, have thousands of community service hours, have a wonderful sisterhood, top grades, but will still be considred “lower tier”. BBB, the sorority that society views as “lower tier” will automatically have a harder time with recruitment, with lower return rates. This means BBB, will have more of a chance to have their chapter closed due to the inability to maintain adequate membership. SO YES, LOOKS PROBABLY HAD A MEASURABLE IMPACT ON ZETA'S RECRUITMENT (as well as every chapter). It is the only viable option is they want a FUTURE on this campus. This does not mean chapters, specifically, ZTA recruited solely upon looks, because so many women came through recruitment Zeta could be a little more selective with grades, personality, and yes, even looks. This is a reality of society and we perpetuate it.

I never intended this to go to any sorority or "tier" and I believe you misinterpreted my post. Strong can be depicted many different ways, strong looks, strong GPA, strong retention rates, strong philanthropy. However, what carries on a chapter through years/decades is strong recruitment, which is unfortunately heavily based on looks. I myself am in a "lower-mid tier" chapter and it kills to see such mediocre return rates for all the good that we do on campus, However AAA has amazing return rates but does very little on campus throughout the year.
