Are letters really important for sorority requirement?

But they don't hurt, either (assuming you get a positive rec from someone who personally knows you). It does help the chapter(s) get to know you a little because just think about how many girls they meet in the first round.

My friend knows a girl in a top tier sorority and she only got a bid because she has thirteen letters of recommendation. They almost didn't let her in until she presented a handwritten note from Hillary Rodman Clinton to tell them to let her in

If you don't have letters it definitely won't hurt you. The vast majority of girls going through do not have letters. But if you do have letters, they can only help you (although it will only be marginally, it definitely won't guarantee your place in a chapter).
