step housing

If STEP greatly affects your decision to join a fraternity then you probably aren't meant for Greek life anyway. Basically sophomores will have to live in campus dorms or STEP approved Greek housing which is less expensive than OSU dorms, probably more fun because you would be living with your pledge class and not random people and a little more leniency because you aren't on campus.

There will only be a select handful of frats that will be step approved. Obviously all the frats owned by OSU will be step approved, like Delt or Phi Tau. So will Fiji. Others might be a harder sell for the step program. OSU should have the step approved houses out soon

Thanks for the info. So will it be better to join a step approved house or one that isn't? I'd imagine step approved houses are better for the long-term. Non-step are if I want to punch holes in walls and party non-stop in the house

I would definitely avoid basing what chapter you choose to rush off of STEP vs. Non-STEP housing.

Advantages of STEP:
-Sophomores will live off campus, less chances for drunk underclassmen wandering back to the dorms and getting citations or written up
-Depending on your insurance plan it could save you money
- Pledge class cohesion if the majority of a class is living in one house
- Less expensive option for sophomores than OSU dorms
-Even large social fraternities like Phi Psi are going to have dry housing anyways
-Less physical damage to the house if it was used for regular social events

Pros of Non-STEP:
-If you're not a university managed house, you can party in the house and have social events there. Some people enjoy partying in a large historic fraternity house and that would be lost with STEP.
-Not having to adhere to OSU stipulations i.e. all STEP houses will need an area for studying

Either way I see socials, personality of brothers and other factors being infinitely more important than STEP or non-STEP

STEP will ruin greek life. Don't listen to the losers who tell you otherwise:

1. You can't drink in your house.
2. No parties in your house.
3. LIVE-IN ADVISOR IN YOUR HOUSE
4. You abide by University Regulations IN YOUR OWN HOUSE.
5. Your house is owned by the UNIVERSITY, not your alumni!!!

The big/better frats are NOT doing STEP, for the above listed reasons. If they wanted to, they could join step, but they don't want to because it'll ruin their social lives.

Joining a step house is fine. you'll just live in there as a sophomore and then move to an annex elsewhere. in fact that's what will happen unfortunately is that frat houses will become ass sophs and the chapter itself will be run by sophs

STEP is going to ruin greek life. Your best bet for a true greek experience is to join a non-STEP house.

Everyone is freaking out unnecessarily. STEP is optional, it makes sense for some chapters who already meet most of the stipulations and for other chapter it might not make as much sense.

1. OSU will not "own STEP houses", probably the stupidest comment I saw thus far and demonstrates you have no knowledge of how real estate or housing corps function.

2. Even Phi Psi is definitely going dry, not necessarily participating in STEP. I am not supporting dry housing but just recognizing this is a trend on campus and seems pretty inevitable in the coming years.

Here's a list of reasons I don't like STEP personally:

1. You can only have 6 socials at your house per year.
2. You can have alcohol in rooms, that's it (other than at the 6 socials)
3. There is a live in advisor so these rules will likely have to actually be followed.
4. The university can send people to inspect at any time.
5. With all these non undergrads sniffing around, most pledge events will have to be out of the house
6. No juniors are gonna want to live in, so if you get a small pledge class that won't fill these 30-40+ houses, either juniors are sol or the house will have empty rooms

The above person is correct in saying that it's a good opportunity for houses where this isn't an issue because of how they operate currently, but I personally think it will kill Greek life here
