Has the university announced which houses will be STEP approved? I feel like that will really impact recruitment.

All of the sororities will most likely be step approved since they are all already dry. However with fraternities it will be a little different cause phi psi, sig chi, kappa sig, and TKE all arent dry so they wont be approved. This is going to give a huge boost in recruiting to Delt, SAE, pike and other dry houses because sophmores can live in the frat house instead of dorms which is a huge plus. The gap between the mid tier and top tier is going to slowly shrink.

sig chi, tke, kappa sig, and phi psi will probably experience huges boosts to their recruitment, and the other houses will suffer.

freshman guys do NOT want to live in a dry house. It is a huge loss - it'll make them think that the dry frats are losers (which they are, except for delt to an extent). No good frat boy will want to live in a house where he can't drink... so for this reason i disagree with your post.

to the person above: partying in an annex is not NEARLY as fun as partying in your own damn house. Partying in a frat mansion is way better than partying in some dumb annex. Being able to drink alcohol and have fun in your house is extremely important for rush. Sig chi, Tke, Kappa Sig, Phi psi, and other wet houses will have huge boosts to their recruiting. They can say, "Yeah dude, of course you can drink in our house! Of course you can party here! We're not losers!"

Having a dry fraternity house will be awful for rush. Dudes do NOT want to live in dry houses, it is as simple as that. This is why, as of now, the main houses are not doing STEP (Delt is the only other relevant house, but they are dry as it stands. It'll be tough on them).

Living in a dry frat house is better than the alternative: living in a dorm with freshmen, RAs, and gdis, which is where sophomores who join non step houses are going to live. Most big frats have 50-70 freshmen/sophomores, having all those kids walking back to the dorms blacked out from a tg is a huge liability issue and will probably result in an increase of the number of chapters who get in trouble.

The houses that are dry now will do it. The houses that aren't will probably wait and see how recruitment is affected this spring, and if it makes a difference will do it for next year.

Is that you can pay dues through the university billing system, which means anyone who doesn't pay dues get disenrolled from their classes. Chapters that are university managed collect 100% of their dues. This could equal a pretty significant budget increase for chapters that switch over to step. Also "dry houses" still let brothers drink in their rooms, alcohol is just banned in the common areas.

Both sig chi and phi psi have agreed to Step. I don't know where people are getting their information but once again almost every fraternity on campus will be doing it. IFC/university have contacted alumni/nationals and put them against a wall. Not partying in the houses will suck but annex partying is fine and under step you can still drink in bed rooms

You're wrong.
For now, tke, kappa sig, sig chi, phi psi are not doing STEP (as of now, this may change) because they don't want to live in a dry, boring house, with the University poking its nose in their personal lives all the time.
Sae, Ato, and some smaller fraternities are not doing STEP because they simply cannot afford to get their house up to par. It's that simple.

I like partying in fraternity houses. I hope the bigger frats don't do step - annexes suck compared to castles.

For the fraternities that do not have STEP approved house, there will be a way for them to group all of there members on the same floor in the same dorm like scholars and learning communities do now.

exactly. step is dumb and unneeded (unless you're a low or middle tier nerd)

Yeah what a great idea, send all your sophomore members home black out drunk after parties and TGs to dorms where they will of course abide by all the rules and never do anything to put your top tier, sick ass chapter at risk.

It's not going to change anything tier wise...Phi Psi, TKE, Sigma Chi and Kappa Sig likely will not do step, at least for the time being. They actually party/have block at their main houses so it would be a huge change for them to get university approved. It might make it slightly harder for them to fill their main house AND maintain multiple annexes if sophomores cannot live there.

Delt, Fiji, SAE, etc. already don't have social events at their main house so it makes sense for these chapters to seek STEP approval. This might give these chapters a very small recruiting tool but it's not like Phi Psi or Sigma Chi need any help recruiting or are competing for the same guys. \n\n\n\n\n
