backtracking here..

1. How many/which houses were doing informal recruitment? I heard that recruitment used to be that houses who weren't at 100 (or close) wouldnt do informal and they would just take a full pledge class in winter to get to 100 which was cap.

Can all houses now take girls in the fall too?? If so, then what is the cap? Are there houses at 60-70 and houses at 125+?? This makes no sense. Please explain!

Maybe you will get a bid from your favorite sorority tomorrow. they may have really liked you but thought for some reason that you would go elsewhere. Maybe you should give the other house a try-what do you have to lose? Obviously they really liked you and felt that you would be a great addition. Good luck!

I meant to say that houses who weren't at 100 BUT were close wouldn't do informal so they could get 'quota' in winter.

The system for informal recruitment/total/quota has changed in the last year-ish.

I'll start with last year's change to cap. As of fall last year, OSU decided that it would change the way it did quota and total, and allowed houses to informally recruit up to campus total (100). (If you remember, there was a bunch of complaining because Theta took like 17 new girls to get up to 100 before FR, which some people accused as "loading their numbers")

They then changed formal recruitment and instead of having quota set at (the somewhat arbitrary) 25 girls/house, OSU moved to a true quota system, taking the number of girls left after philanthropy round and dividing it by 14. This meant that each house could take whatever quota was (24 last year i think?) even if it put them over 100. That left some houses with 120-125 girls after formal recruitment. Those houses that didnt reach 100 through quota could either take more than quota on bid day, snap bid, or COB up to 100.

thanks for the honesty below. i feel like i shouldn't take the "top tier" just to try it... someone else might have really loved it that i would be taking it away from....and maybe my "middle" will call? maybe not we shall see....thanks

So fall recruitment is the same this year. Everyone can take girls up to 100, and then everyone can take quota in the winter (plus whoever doesnt get to 100 through quota can then COB in the winter and spring).

Sooo... basically yes, at this point there will be several houses going into formal recruitment with 60-70 girls, and others with 100. Not fair IMO, but that's the way it is. This also means that come January, there will be some houses with 20+ girls over total (depending on quota), while some houses inevitablly will still be under it.

So it seems like this just hurts the smaller houses and helps 'load' the bigger houses.

I forgot that once a chapter reaches 100, they cannot informally recruit any more girls. So a chapter can go over 100+ if they are at 100 or close to it before formal recruitment, but if they are at, for example, 75 girls and quota for formal is 25, they will be at total at 100 and cannot informally recruit in the spring. Hope that makes sense.

Used to be that all houses could have up to 100 girls AFTER formal, hard cap. There weren't as many bids going out during fall informal. Last year Panhel changed the rules and said that houses could have 100 girls hard cap BEFORE formal, effectively raising house caps to around 125. So houses are more interested in upperclassmen this year as they increase their numbers. There is no set quota for informal-just the number of vacancies due to graduation/transfers, etc. that leave them under 100. So yes, some houses may be at 65 right now, so they could take 35 if they wanted to, some may be at 90, and could take 10 if they wanted to. Or they could take less. Quota is a fixed number for formal in the winter. Hope this helps. It is confusing.

As I was typing the post directly below, someone else explained the system far better than I did! Good job! Of course I couldn't see that they had already posted...
