So is it significantly harder to get a bid as a sophomore? Why is that the case?

Significantly - no.
Harder - yes.

I will add to the prior comment that getting into a better house is harder as a sophomore. For example, if all you were left as a first year student was middle tier, plan on only getting a lower tier chapter as a sophomore.

Why is it so much harder? Have many of you gotten bids as sophomores?

Chapters want as many years of dues from a member as possible. Plus, they want to keep class size as even as possible. If you recruit too many sophomores, you will have too large of a class and when they graduate, a chapter would need to run COR in the fall right after that.
Things are different than how they used to be. There are plenty of great prospects that are freshman so they don't need as many upperclassmen.
