Will you typically get the house you ranked first in pref round? How does that all work? Will you only get your 2nd pick if your first didn't want you at all?

If you are on the first bid list of your #1, you will get your #1. You might still get them depending on where you are listed on their 2nd bid list. The number of girls on the first bid list = quota. The number of girls on their second list could be anywhere from quota to 3 or 4 x quota based on how many girls a chapter is permitted to invite back to Pref. Chapters with historically high return rates are limited on how many they can invite to Pref.

The way the computer works is that it matches everyone who lists their #1 with the house that has them on their first bid list. Then it looks at how many openings each house has after that. Example, quota = 50 and House ABC has 40 of 50 girls on their first list that rank them as #1 The computer then take a look at ABC's #51- #61 ranked girl. If #51- #61 all rank ABC as #1, they will all get ABC and the computer will stop matching ABC. Chances are high the computer will need to go deeper into the list, but not necessarily to the bottom in this example.

If Chapter DEF only matches say 5 of their first bid list, they will probably need to go very deep into their second list to match

Using example ABC above, let's say you have ABC as #1 and you are #95 on their list. Since ABD filled their quota by stopping at #61, you will not get ABC and the computer will look at your #2. If you listed DEF as your #2 and you are on DEF's first list, you will get a bid from DEF.

This is a very basic example because you are dealing with 900 PNMs that will attend Pref at 1 - 3 chapters and there are a lot of complicated scenarios.

A note to all PNMs: THE COMPUTER WILL NOT DROP YOU. If you don't get a bid from any house it's because you were too low on all of the lists of the houses you ranked. Don't blame the computer.

If you maximize your options (write down all the houses you attended for pref on your pref selections) you are guaranteed a bid. Not necessarily to your top choice, but you will be in a house.
Attend 3 houses, write down 3. Attend 2 houses, write down 2. Attend 1 house, that is your house. If you don't maximize your options there is a chance you won't get a bid!

In regards to the person above, this is called "quota additions". If you maximize your options, but are not matched with a house, you will be given a bid to a chapter that has already reached quota (this is why some houses' new member classes will be higher than quota). However, in VERY rare cases, you may still not receive a bid even if you maximized your options. And this is usually one girl out of like 1000, so I wouldn't worry about it.
