sororitys

Sororities are structured similarly. The "top tier" also known as "the big 5" are Kappa, DG, Pi Phi, Theta and Alpha Phi. It is hard to determine who truly is the best, because just like sororities, fratenrity pledge classes have their favorite sororities. However, it is safe to say that Kappa, DG and Pi Phi are a little better than Theta and APhi, as Theta is very grade oriented and not as social and APhi has been letting in some not-so-favorable members. These sororities are considered the top because they are into partying and consistently have the best looking members as compared to other sororities (in the words of my frat friends, not me!).

The middle tier consists of KD, Chi O, AGD, Tri Delt and depending on who you ask, maybe one or two more. These sororities aren't as social oriented as the top, but are much more involved on campus and typically have good grades (not to say the top doesn't have good grades or high involvement, just where the middle shines as opposed to socially). KD probably does more with top tier houses than the others, but is still not looked on as favorably by guys in top houses (their words, not mine).

Any other sororties aren't very well known and would be considered lower tier.

In cocnlusion, the top tier are more preppy and more into partying, while the middle is more into ssterhood and campus involvement (from as an objective POV I can give.

Hope this helps clear the air for you PNMs out there.

Any of the top 9 chapters that you have listed are solid chapters. As you have mentioned, every chapter is known for something different. When going through recruitment look at the members and think the following to yourself...

-will they stay up with you all night when your boyfriend breaks up with you?
-will they accept me without makeup, doing my hair or wearing the latest fashions?
-will they rage so hard that I'll be afraid to tell my parents?
-will they be excited to meet my family member/friend/etc who might not be a beauty queen or be overweight?
-do they talk behind other's back?
-do they get along with other chapters?
-do their members get into law school, grad school, med school or do they just get married?

There are some PNMS who want to get into the house with the best looking girls that party hard and others who will look deeper. Each PNM will need to decide as they go through recruitment and they are cut from some chapters.

What about bottom chapters? Are those not worth joining at all or...?

All chapters have something to offer everyone. Not every chapter is for everyone, which includes top tier chapters.
Bottom chapters have great sisterhoods. You won't necessary do a lot with the top fraternities, but that is fine if you going into rush knowing that.

You will still have pregames and stuff with top chapters, you will just have more TG's and pregames with the middle chapters which is perfectly fine, they're all great guys. All chapters have socials, philanthropy events, sisterhood events, etc and are very active, no matter what tier. Don't join a chapter just for the socials- focus on the more important questions like the original poster said!

Once you are in greek life you can hang out with whatever frat you want regardless of what your chapter does. I agree with "Chapters"...ultimately you are joining a sorority that you will be in for the next four years and you want that experience to be enjoyable, not based on a high-school popularity contest. Have an open mind. People come in to recruitment with misconceptions about certain chapters and that's what perpetuates the tier system, not at all the chapters themselves.

I'm not sure what chapter you are in, but joining a sorority is for life not four years.
You will have many opportunities and connections that go beyond college wherever you move. My Big moved out to California and joined the alumni chapter there and has been able to make a lot of friends in a location where she really didn't know anyone. A couple of the alumni introduced her to some great guys that she has dated.
As others have said, all chapters have something to offer and you should keep an open mind.
