Is it a good idea to contact the rush chair prior to rush starting? Will it benefit me in any way?

yes. send your resume and short introduction so they know who you are going thru. letters of rec can help a lot too to set you apart. there will probably be around 50-60 girls going for a couple spots in each sorority. good luck!

If you're a dude, please don't send any of that shi.t. We don't really care. But it's still good to contact the rush chair because that shows you're really interested and it'll be easier to find out about rush events. You won't get a bid unless you get along well with the guys, but contacting the rush chair doesn't hurt.

I'm guessing the OP is looking at sororities since her name was PNM. You can email the recruitment chairs but not every chapter will be allowed to recruit during fall semester. Based on just chapter sizes at the end of spring, I know DDD, Kappa, PiPhi, Alpha Pi and Theta won't be recruiting.

Go to the Involvement Fair and talk to the houses. That is the best way to start expressing sincere interest. If you are a girl, find alums to write you a rec for houses -- not just the houses that you think you are interested in, but as many houses as possible. You might get cut from the houses where you think you think you fit best.
