fall rush questions

by: huf

Didnt rush last year but going to rush fraternities this fall.

First do we sign up for rush?
How do we hear about different rush events/are they all within the same time period?
What do we wear to rush events/any recommendations? (polo/brooks/vines or more casual?)
Any tips to stand out? Do fraternities prefer you solo rush them or that you check out more places so youre not a try hard?

Sign up for rush on the IFC website. Generally all rush events are held during the same time period, but some frats like Phi Psi hold theirs before everyone else. You can find out where/when rush events are by looking on the chapters website, going to the involvement fair, or by contacting the rush chair directly. Their emails will be on the chapters' websites.

As a rush chair, I strongly recommend contacting all of the rush chairs for the fraternities you are interested in. It's much easier for us to provide you with info if we know you're interested and can contact you personally.

Any tips during rush from original post question?
And when you sign up through IFC website doesn't it just contact the chairs for you or no?
And is phi psi's like the first week of school?

Signing up for IFC does not contact the rush chairs for you, so if you want to do that you need to do it yourself. Its not entirely necessary for any fraternity, but it definitely can't hurt and will make sure you know about all of the events.

All of the events will be in the same time period. You can hear about them by their chapter website, or going to different fraternity's booths at the involvement fair.

Polo/Vines/Brooks all work for rush events. Button up, shorts (not cargos) and sperrys and you can't go wrong for rush attire, unless the event is specified as formal.

You can stand out by just being outgoing. A lot of guys (more so freshman, but some fall rushees too) stand around and wait to be approached and then only talk when they're sought out. You'll make an impression if you take on yourself to introduce yourself and meet all the brothers at the event as opposed to waiting for them to come up to you.

And solo rush or not is up to you. Theres not way for the fraternity to know unless you tell them, so if you know that theres only one house you want to join theres not really a point to rushing others, but I do recommend going to as many as possible if you aren't entirely sure what you want or don't have friends in the chapter you think you wanna join.

Just wait till the fall involvement fair or whatever it's called and the rush chairs will tell you everything.

Dress nice. Unless its basketball or something like that you should be wearing a collared shirt and nice shorts/pants. Talk to as many brothers as possible, especially the rush chair, and make sure they have your contact information. You need to make them remember you. Rush as many places as possible because with the current state of greek life, the top houses (TKE/PhiPsi and even Kappa Sig) will be very selective. But even if you don't get into those houses you can still have a great time in greek life. It has made my college experience 100x better.
