Frats merging and changing around

Yep I am a pathetic dad but I'm curious. I was a Phi Delt at OSU back in the day and my daughter is going through rush this week and she gave me the lowdown on the new world order over Xmas. Lots has changed (no surprise there) When I was at OSU, top dogs were Sigma Chi, Kappa Sig, TKE, Delt, Phi Tau, Sammy. I'd say Phi Delt was upper mid but no one really talked about rankings like you do on this site.

My daughter told me Sammy got kicked off and became an entirely different frat? And Kappa Sig is now Kappa Alpha? And other frats have merged? My question is, how does that even work? We were told once we got initiated we couldn't join another frat so how is it possible to chop and change? And what's with all these off campus frats, how does that work?
