Has Theta done informal in the past? I know no one knows until later what sororities do informal.

mmhmmm, but they have a very closed off and selective process where you have to kind of already be friends with a few members. It preserves their rank as "top tier" by keeping their recruitment private.

however its doubtfull that they do right now because they were one of the larger chapters at recruitment, and they just graduated a normal sized senior class.

A lot of top and mid tier do this. If they have only a couple of openings they have a short list, typically girls already known to the chapter, who they invite to a few informal events. These are not advertised events and sort of hush hush. Definitely invite only.

I don't think it's looked down upon. They do it because they can.

In which case would it be good to reach out to recruitment chairs this summer in an email to express interest, would that help with anything?

I'm pretty sure that out of the 6-7 sororities that had informal PC's, only 2 actually had an event. So yes, email the recruitment chairs to get on their radar, but you should also try networking with girls in the chapter. I know of my chapter, we only took girls on sprite dates (basically a causal meeting with a few girls from the chapter) if they were recommended by someone in the chapter. So if you're a transfer: talk to your friends and see if they know girls in a sorority and ask them to put you in touch with them. If you aren't a transfer, hopefully you have friends in the chapter you want to join.

It is possible to get an informal bid without knowing anyone, it's just more difficult to get your foot in the door
