rushing as a sophomore/transfer

by: Transfer

I'm a freshman at Miami and thinking about transferring to OSU for the fall. Being in a sorority would make the transition a million times easier, but how hard would it be to get into a decent one with the transfer and sophomore labels on me? Is it at all common for sophomores to rush?

You can get into any too tier sorority being a sophomore transfer. It's going to be harder if you aren't the most attractive or interesting , but if you are then don't worry

The above are exactly correct. Don't listen to anyone telling you other wise. You will end up in the chapter that you belong in (whether it is top tier or bottom tier). Just think, if you were a freshman non-transfer and rushed, you would still be put in the chapter you belong in, you don't get bumped down for it. If you don't get into top tier, that means you wouldn't have as a freshman either. Goodluck!

top tiers get to cut more girls each round, and they will cut sophomores more aggressively than freshman, but if youre a stand out you still will get in.

You will also find that tiers at Miami do not necessarily correlate with tiers at OSU.

Regardless of if you pledge a sorority or not, you can have a social life at Ohio State where you can't at Miami. Columbus is a metropolis with a lot of things to do. Oxford is in the middle of a cow pasture.

And this is why proletariats go to OSU and the bourgeoisie goes to Miami.

be fine. I would say a third of most of the pledge classes this year were actually sophomores! If you're pretty and can carry a halfway decent convo you'll get a bid to a top 5, which is Pi Phi, DG, Kappa, Alpha Phi, and Theta.

It really depends on you. Top tier sororities don't consider sophomores ideal however if you're really pretty and vibe well with the girls then they will overlook it. But it definitely is a hindrance. And don't think they won't ask because it's the first question out of their mouths.

I have some high school friends in Theta, Pi Phi, and DZ...would that be helpful?

Definitely talk to your friends in theta and piphi. Are you thinking about going through informal recruitment in the fall, or formal rush in the winter?

With sororities being so big numbers-wise these days, don't think that having a few friends in a sorority will be enough to pull you in-unless those friends are membership chairs. They can advocate for you, but you have to assume that other girls will be advocating for their friends also. Now it probably can't hurt, either, in most cases. But you want to focus on finding the house that is the right fit-and you will.

I was thinking probably formal in the winter, obviously it would be nice to do informal in the fall and have some friends faster but I've heard only the really bottom tier sororities participate if any at all

just wait for the fall to see who will be holding informal. last year kd, tri delt, xo, fuzzie, axo, aephi, aopi all did informal. while you think you may not be interested in any of those, they are all houses filled with great girls. go to the open houses and you might surprise yourself if you end up loving the house. if you dont like it, dont accept COB invitations then prepare for formal. but it really doesn't hurt to go through informal. it will get you into a group a lot faster and make the transition from transferring a LOT better.

I know girls who have rushed as sophomores and gotten into top tier sororities. If you're attractive and can hold a conversation you should be fine.
