rat race
by: confused
Is Greek life here at OSU just a Rat Race of fraternities trying to not be the one kicked off? Or are the ones who have been kicked off and returned lately better off? Or even a mix of both, with the absolute best completely avoiding it and those in the middle just bumping around until theyre kicked off and then return?
Phi Psi, TKE, Sig Chi, Sammy, and Beta were all the "top houses" and avoided being on probation (until these last two years removed Sammy and Beta, and left SigChi a mess)
Kappa Sig and Delt were both kicked off only to return a few years later, but never regain prior strength.
Pike and Phi Delt have both been on and off suspension (like SigChi was) but never officially kicked off.
Fiji, ATO, Sig Ep, and SAE were all pulled within the last 20 years because of low participation and failure to meet national requirements.
I feel like its not ironic that these fraternities are in similar catagories now based on what happened to them, but I dont really understand why...?

Well obviously the IFC has an agenda.
Why are/were Phi Psi, Sammy, Sig Chi and TKE the best fraternities on campus? Because they've been this way for many years now. When you're the best, you only recruit the best. So many people want to go out for those fraternities meaning they can be super selective.
When a fraternity gets kicked off (or chapter reviewed) and then comes back, the best rushees probably don't want to spend their first 2 years etc on strict social probation. Now these fraternities can't pick the cream of the crop anymore and have to settle for just OK guys.
That's what's preventing Delt, Phi Delt, Kappa Sig from rising up to that elite level. Sure they have plenty of cool/good looking guys. But because they're "mid tier" they also have plenty of weirdos. Sure the "Big 4" have their weirdos too but it's far and in between compared to the rest.
Basically Delt, Phi Delt and Kappa Sig can get top tier status but it takebe a few years of good recruiting.

Honestly I would have to disagree with "Well on". Like the old saying goes, like goes with like. Similar people are going to be attracted to each other. TKE, Phi Psi, Sammy, etc all recruited a certain type of person. You cant argue that every "top tier" frat had a different range of guys yet still being able to maintain top tier status. Now, you must ask yourself what makes a fraternity "top-tier". The answer is that top tier fraternities are the ones that hang out with the best/hottest sororities. The best/hottest sororities want to hang out with certain kind of men, not coincidentally men that occupy the "top-tier" status. However, this doesnt mean the whole "tier" system isn't arbitrary. People should join chapters based on the type of people that occupy it that they can relate to. Alpha Phi or DG would be a terrible matchup with SigEp. While Im sure all the guys in Sig Ep would love to be partying with these girls, the truth of the matter is that women in Alpha Phi would probably have no interest in the type of men that join Sig Ep. Thats not to say there arent "mid-tier" sororties that have hot women that would fit in with Sig Ep, it just means that "top-tier" sororities wouldn't mix well with non "top-tier" frats because of personality differences . This problem is exemplified when Ohio State pairs completely incompatible sororitys/frats during Homecoming/Greek Week in order to mix and expand Greek life.

Well said. Things need to change quickly. If everyone would start defending each other and looking out for fellow Greeks we would be a lot better off. So what if you don't agree with the lifestyle of another fraternity or sorority? They are still part of the greek community and everyone needs each other to thrive.
