No you do not. When I went through recruitment I put down my top two houses after pref and did not get a bid. I then was contacted a week and a half later by my chapter who was my #2 and was offered a bid- I knew nobody in the chapter I assume I was just higher up on their flex list- meaning I was in line to be given a bid next. Also some chapters look at girls who didn’t join and if any of them particularly liked you they can reccomend you. It differs by chapter- but generally no you don’t have to know someone.

best of luck! Are there multiple houses you’d accept from/ what houses bc if you find a way to let them know you’re still interested they could notice you. Like I know a girl who legit dm’d a girl she got along with during recruitiment and ended up joining that chapter!

I would take a bid from majority of the chapters except a few that I really didn’t get along with during formal. I just wish I knew what houses were looking for people for cob rather than blindly guessing

That's not how it works anymore. If you maximize your options and list both chapters you preffed, you will get a bid from either of those. If you didn't fall on their top bid list before they met quota, you'd be a quota addition and still attend bid day festivities. No one would know you were a QA.
Some chapters will indeed COB without advertising it to the general public. Some chapters will extend cob bids to existing friends of members only.
