need advice
by: PNMFreshman looking to rush frats in spring, but the frats that have been kicked off seam to have by far the best parties/blocks. They also appear to get the best/hottest strats to party with them. So what should I do? Is Greek life gonna die? Will houses that got closed fade and will other houses rise to the top? Who will they be ?

The reason it seems like that is because its true. IFC has put very strict rules on frats like they cant even serve hard alcohol anymore Underground frats like phi psi sammy tke were the top ones and girls that hung out with them arent going to just stop. They also have the most fun parties/guys. Go to a delt or sig chi block then go to a sammy phi psi tke block and youll see what I mean

Honestly man I feel bad for you and all the other guys that want to rush. Because it’s tough to predict how a fraternity will do underground. Sammy survived last time they were kicked off but I think the biggest thing that helped that was Kappa getting kicked off so they had a sorority to mix with all the time.
I guess my advice would be to check both out, but pay pretty close attention to the other guys rushing the underground houses you’re thinking about. Once the older guys graduate if the new guys don’t want to put in the work, the house and reputation will fade and die, and you won’t be bringing younger guys for you to form the experience with, so you’ll want your pledge class to be real close in case that does happen.
Safer bet is definitely the above ground houses, but honestly I’d be surprised if all of them survived the school year anyway. Either way good luck and hope you figure it out, I’m definitely glad I’m not in your position

From what I hear from my friends in the underground houses, though everyone complains a lot about their nationals, they do actually provide a lot of support and in keeping everyone organized. I don't think the underground houses anticipated just how much work it is to not only keep everything functioning but also ensure a steady stream of new high standard members to keep things going. I can't see the underground houses existing in a couple of years - or if they do they will be really different.

Joining an off campus house is a high risk-high reward situation. You’ll basically be gamling your (parent’s) money on whether or not older guys you don’t know will be able to keep it together. If it seems like a safe bet I’d go for it, but as someone who’s in an on-campus house, I can say confidently that we live damn good. Rush both and get a feel for it

I think it depends what frat you plan on joining, some of the off campus frats have no idea what theyre doing and will most likely fade away but frats like sammy for example has been off campus for like 5 years and has successfully stayed on top. OSU greek life right now is an unfortunate situation but if you want that classic fun greek life experience underground frats are the way to go due to a lack of strict rules governing them. But make sure you join one that seems like they know what theyre doing.
