major reason osu is cracking down on greek life: land

by:

Article on The Lantern titled "What to expect at 15th and High", give it a read.

Currently, 15th ave is greek row. You bet your ass OSU is eyeing a land grab in the near future to complement their "“University Square”. Right now the only thing standing in their way is greek life. Would be pretty convenient for them to get rid of all the frat/sorority houses in time for completion of the project, so they've decided to start cracking down on us now.

They're not even being discrete about it either. Key takeaways from the article:

"The buildings along East 15th Avenues “University Square” will feature mixed-use retail spaces such as patios at street level and the upstairs space will house Ohio State administrative buildings."

"In addition to the new businesses, East 15th Avenue will be straightened to make it better align with The Oval and simplify the intersection to make it safer for pedestrians."

this is an interesting take but this is not a real estate conspiracy. none of the frats in trouble even have houses on 15th except i guess delt, who doesn’t party in their house. besides, suspending an organization doesn’t mean you can bulldoze the house and seize the property the next day. the sole reason behind student conduct hijacking everything from the office of student life and blowing it to smitherenes is to avoid the liability that comes with media disasters tied to organizations that are under the university’s umbrella. that’s it cut and dry, OSU is a massive conglomerate and more so a business than a place of higher education. they don’t want bad press from greek life so they’re bouncing everyone who they have even the slightest reason to start to believe might be a threat to the university’s name

Exactly my point- think about the value of that real estate, especially once the construction on their new campus gateway is complete. If they completely dissolve greek life (which has yet to be seen obviously), they'd then be in a great position to capitalize on that land. When you look at it from their perspective as a business, I wouldnt be surprised if thats where theyre going with this.

It's all about risk management and perception of the university by the public. They don't want any deaths on their watch (like PSU) or lawsuits, and they don't want anything to besmirch the mighty OSU brand.

Yeah, pretty shallow of them to not want any deaths.

yeah i’m pretty sure no one is ridiculing the university for not wanting kids to die. what’s wrong is the completely unjust, inconsistent, and biased process they’ve used in evaluating evidence they have against organizations and handing down punishments. the point we are making is that the school is not truly concerned about the students, simply the reflection in the media which affects the revenue stream the school receives. if they wanted to make a real action plan to enforce rules and ensure safety, they’d do something simple and intuitive like make party checks happen randomly during events instead of hours before when frats can easily hide cases/liquor and toss out some pizza and water bottles to make it appear they are following protocol. once you actually read through the IFC rules and gain an understanding of how unrealistic they are paired with the less-than-half-ass attempt made at enforcing said rules, you might start to understand this is all about the university abusing their unfair leverage to protect its brand, not the students
