How influential are recommendations in this process for sororitys?

Recs aren't required and aren't that influential, at least not in my chapter. Unless your rec letter is from someone very close to the chapter - a very involved alum, say - or high up in the national organization, it is a nice-to-have but isn't going to make much of a difference. This is unlike the southern schools where the sorority you'll be in is pretty much decided at birth.

I bet your alumni would LOVE to hear how the time they put in to write a recommendation was not influential.

they're very helpful in mine. we treat rec letters and legacies almost identically; they get paired with a better recruiter right away, are exempt from grade cuts, and if they make it to pref they'll be on our bid list or on the top third of the B list

which sororities treat it like that

Good to see some actives RESPECT their alumni.

houses that are historically good and have elaborate homes. If your chapter was/is good alums stay involved, if alums are involved they offset tons of daily costs (donating meals for recruitment, sponsoring members who fall into financial hardship, etc) they're also the big donors for house renovations, and are well connected on campus to allow more bad behavior slide (ie. kappa all these years) So to guess who cares about recs and legacies;
DG
Pi Phi
DDD
Theta
Kappa

^the longest operating chapters, have the biggest/nicest homes, fundraise the most. Alpha Phi and KD have smaller/homier houses, and you'll notice they aren't in a position to renovate or buy (Alpha Phi actually had to sell land to afford taxes awhile back, Pi Phi bought it for their parking lot)

I’m an alum and my sorority does value recommendations. I’ve written a few and my House makes sure to place the PNM with actives that have similarities so if there is a fit, it’ll happen organically . I’d be sooo irked if my house did not value alumni Rec’s. I’m shocked that there are actives that say they don’t matter at all. What a slap in the face to your alumni!

Calm down. Some of us have too many alums to be able to consider every rec letter they send us. We get too many re letters to consider them all for every single girl. Doesn’t mean we don’t care about alum, but it’s hard to see if an alum from 20 years ago at the Alabama chapter is sending it and genuinely knows the gir, or if it’s someone from 5 years ago who went to OSU and knows our chapter.

We love our alum and they help us with recruitment, but it’s impossible for our chapter to keep up with all the recs & legacies we get.

Hey all you alums complaining about how kids these days don't respect their elders - sorry the job market sucks for you but hopefully once you're in employment you'll use your time more usefully than trolling on a greek life website. God bless!

In my house, they really only help in the first round and that would only be if were on the fence with liking you. Basically you get a few extra “points” if you have them, but if we already can tell we either really like you or really don’t it won’t matter.

Not sure why people are butthurt about recs not mattering. A lot of the time, recs are submitted by alums who barely know the girl. You see that especially in the South, where people reach out to random alums to get a rec letter for each house. So why should actives care about those rec letters? Their main purpose is to get a little more perspective on a PNM.

Besides, chapters vary a lot from school to school. Just because a PNM would fit in well at a sorority in one school doesn't mean she'd be a good fit at another school. Why not give her spot to a PNM that would be a better match?

it's kinda like when your parents got veto power over what you did as a kid because they had money. Some chapters the alums have a lot of money and power, others it's not as important. Most times there aren't that many Recs and Legacies going through here, so unlike the South where the alums partically pick the chapters, or Recs are just a checkbox to fill, It does cause most chapters here to at least look/check twice on a pnm.
