question about greek life
by: Pnm?Hey everyone. I’m a freshman deciding if I wanna rush or not after break. I was wondering if anyone could tell me a little about what’s going on with the suspension and how that will affect pledging a sorority? LIke will there be no mixers and tgs to go to now? I know sororities do other stuff like philanthropy can someone tell me a little bit about how involved that is/how much it’s worth it to pay the dues if there’s no social aspect? Sorry for all the questions !!

"how much it’s worth it to pay the dues if there’s no social aspect"
Read that sentence again and ask yourself how you're coming across.
A social sorority isn't "social" because of parties with guys. They're "social" because they're based on friendship/sisterhood versus a common professional interest or being a purely service-based organization - and both of those tend to be co-ed as well with a few exceptions.
So no, you should not rush until you get an attitude adjustment. And if you say things like this during recruitment, you will likely get cut by most if not every house. Yes, parties with fraternities are fun. And it sucks that IFC is suspended. But I would never say that they're the main reason I pay my dues. And why would a sorority give you a bid if you cared about guys more than the actual sorority? If you want to bang guys, you can do that without a sorority.
Now, to answer your question: there will likely be TGs next semester, but it will depend on what OSU decides and they may be closely monitored. Not sure how strict things will be going forward, but even if it's only one semester without TGs (or with minimal ones), that's a pretty short chunk of time. And there's other social events besides TGs btw

To actually answer your questions- I’m sure most frats are gonna be fine as soon as next semester starts, the way socials work will just be different. I’d guess a couple frats might be late to come back/might be kicked off, but that’s just speculation at this point.
Ignore all the hate here, a huge part everyone joins is for the social life. It’s totally fair to be hesitant to spend 2k on a sorority if you aren’t sure of the social scene

Ignoring all the drama of this post...
Suspensions honestly won’t have much of an impact on you. The suspension will be lifted for each chapter after they do the necessary steps IFC outlined earlier this week. Frats will be coming back by the time of bid day, if not sooner. Also, Some sororities have rules about TGs and mixers you go to as a new member anyways, so you may not be going to many right away. Most sororities managed just fine in the end of the semester. There were TGs with each other (which were a lot of fun honestly,) or chapters had “bring a date” socials where they just brought guys they knew from frats anyways so it was not much different. After socials, you’ll go to the bars anyways and be with fraternity men.
I hope you aren’t rushing solely for the party aspect, and I hope you don’t think that’s what the money you invest in the chapter is for. A lot of social expensive, especially alcohol and what not, falls on the frats. Try not to focus on the fraternities when rushing. You should be focusing on finding your sisters & everything else will fall into place.
