low gpa and rushing

by:

I have a low GPA because I had extremely tough course load this semester. I'm expecting anything from a 2.5- 2.6 GPA because of stem classes. I am also in the honors college and I'm taking honors classes as well. Do you know if they take the honors college classes into consideration for a low GPA? Will I be cut from all sororities due to my low GPA, even though I'm in honors?

They will cut you.. Doesn't matter what you are studying, a low GPA will bring the whole average down and no one wants that.

The main reason why sororities cut girls with lower GPAs is because they know that they will need to spend more time studying and as such won't be able to commit as fully as someone who has their GPA under control already. Worst case scenario is that they take a girl who has to drop or go inactive because they need to focus on their grades. And honestly if you are already struggling with classes I would recommend focusing on your studies and not joining a sorority. Its a big time commitment and your classes will only get more difficult as you get older.

If grades are important to you, consider rushing again when you have a better gpa. I know girls that did this and ended up in chi o and Theta. Just something to consider

I went through recruitment with a 2.6 and got dropped by every house. I eventually joined through informal. A lot of houses have national's rules for their gpa cut off. Very few have any for 2.5 - 2.6. If you want to be in one that is more academic, you WILL have to re-rush or wait til next year. The only good I see you rushing now is to get a feel for recruitment & when you get cut it is more of a reality check since not every group can accept everyone. I also agree that it does not matter what major you are in. Your classes will get harder and it is no excuse. If your major is too hard for you then you should switch. If you mention during recruitment your major is hard or do not seem passionate, you will not get in since they will assume you will miss many events for studying, etc.

It doesn’t matter what classes you take they only care about the gpa number. They’ll have no idea what classes you’re even taking unless you tell them and don’t come off as a stem major who always just tells everyone how much harder her major is than anyone else’s. People will get annoyed by that

I’m going to be honest, you will get cut. The exact same thing happened to me the first time I rushed. Still go through it because it’ll give you a good idea and maybe you won’t get cut from everywhere. Be prepared to be cut from everyone though, and if you don’t just let take that as a plus.

If you’re really interested in rushing, try informal in the fall. If you’re in STEM & fall under one of their majors, you can guarantee Phi a Rho will be recruiting in the fall too.

Also, don’t listen to anyone who says if your major of hard then it only gets harder. From someone in engineering, your classes actually get easier as time goes on & you pass the weed out classes. Also, my GPA personally was helped a TON by being in Greek life. It kept me on top of my academic and finally gave me a good balance. Don’t let that stop you from joining a sorority. Definitely try rushing again if you do get cut from everywhere & you do want to go greek.

All of this.

Please don't rule out Greek life, but maybe wait til informal or go Phi Sigma Rho (amazing group of women btw). Or if you're willing to take the chance, try formal, even just to get a feel for houses. You never know, something could work out!

I had a 2.7 and got into the sorority I wanted to be in! Two other girls I know had 2.5's and got into top tiers as well! Don't let your grades discourage you! If they like you they will take you (:

Girl, what school were you rushing at? I don’t know any chapter here other than maybe AOII or AEPhi that MIGHT take a 2.5, even then, it’s highly unlikely. When ZTA established their average GPA was even over a 3.0 and cut girls under a 2.75.

How are you in honors with a 2.5 GPA? You get cut from honors once your GPA dips below 3.4. Not that honors will help with rushing anyways.

As a senior, if I hear a girl has a low GPA because she has a "hard major" it's an immediate no from me. Difficulty is relative, and I've had more than my fair share of STEM majors tell me their work is harder than mine just because I'm writing essays instead of working in a lab. There's a difference between something unexpected happening and affecting your grades (a death in the family, sudden illness, etc) and just coming to college and realizing you actually need to study. That's 50% of the reason why schools do deferred recruitment in the first place, so PNMs can figure out how to adjust to college life. If your GPA is a 2.5, it shows us you haven't made that adjustment yet, and if you back it up with excuses, it shows me you lack a sense of maturity and responsibility for your actions.
