question about gpa for sorority recruitment

by:

I was wondering how much gpa influences sorority recruitment and how much they consider your major or if you go to main or a branch campus. For example an engineering major and other stem majors would be more likely to have a lower gpa than a communication or education major. Also, the classes at the branch campuses are said to be way easier. Would someone with a higher gpa that goes to a branch/is in an easy major be considered more over someone with a lower gpa but hard major? I just feel like that's unfair

For my chapter, as long as you hit the minimum GPA, GPA doesn’t matter. If you’re under the GPA cut off, you’re cut.

GPA is calculated into your overall rank on the list.

And just because you have a harder major doesn't mean we should cut you extra slack. Grow up. If you're struggling with classes that much, you should probably join a professional organization instead because sororities require a lot of your free time. And some women choose to meet in the middle and join Phi Sigma Rho, depending on if they're eligible.

Also why would it matter if you're in a branch campus for GPA? Very, very few women from branch campuses go through recruitment while still at the branch campus. Most of them are Sophomore transfers, so they face their own difficulties during recruitment. But no, they aren't given more scrutiny because they first went to a branch campus.

Plenty of women in my sorority are in STEM majors and make 3.5-4.0 GPAs btw. But if you're a Cs get degrees kind of girl, Greek life isn't for you.

it doesn't matter what major you are, your gpa is your gpa for rush. the houses pretty much cut anyone under their gpa requirements minus a few exceptions. other than not getting cut, gpa doesn't help much. also many girls in greek life are communication/education majors that you refer to as "easy majors" so I wouldn't go into recruitment with that attitude/say anything like that during recruitment because people might get annoyed by that and that's a bad attitude to have in general. also like 2 people from branch campuses go through rush so they won't affect you getting cut from a house. if you get cut it's another reason

since everyone's membership selection process is different (and part of ritual therefore not commonly known) I'd hesitate before saying that GPA doesn't factor into a PNMs score with a chapter other that getting cut. There's literally no way to know that if you're not a member of a given organization.

It doesn’t matter your major, but as long as you have a 3.0 you’ll be fine except for chi o and theta (3.5 to be safe).

I️ will say that sororities are primarily business, coms, and education majors so it can be hard for engineering and other “hard majors” to relate to their sisters sometimes in terms of school. I️ say this as a junior engineering student in a sorority. For example, a lot of my sisters won’t understand when you have to sell your football ticket to study for an exam that isn’t until that Thursday or Friday or can’t go out as often as them on weeknights, and you really can’t compare your classes without sounding rude even though you know it’s true that for the most of the time the material is harder and you can’t rely on studying a day or two in advance to do well.

Also, you won’t always have study buddies in your classes like they say you will during recruitment. That’s true for the more popular majors, but The few girls in my chapter who are engineering or pre professional or whatever tend to be the only girls in my sorority in those classes. If you’re worried about your major and being in a sorority consider something like phi sigma rho or delta omega kappa because you’ll have more girls you’re able to relate to and study with if that’s a concern.

Not saying I️ don’t like my sorority, I️ just wish I️ realized the time commitment and how few other girls would me in any of my classes before I️ went through and I️ would’ve considered phi rho more.

I️ will also add that a lot of girls in stem majors end up dropping because of the time commitment required by both their sorority and school, so that fact may hurt you for some chapters, but not your gpa as long as you have a 3.0.

I️ had a 2.9 in a coma major when I️ went through and ended up in a “top tier” chapter so if they like you enough it won’t matter

GPA 200% matters. I was cut from my house originally when I rushed the first time because my GPA was below our chapter’s standards (not PHA’s). I actually was cut from every house my first time, not all becaus of that, but likely due to it a lot because I had a 2.7 at the time. I’m an engineering major which SUCKED because they didn’t take that into account compared to majors that have a history of higher GPAs. They don’t care because even if you’re in a hard major, your lower GPA will bring their chapter’s down.

GPA is huge. If you have above a 3, you’re fine. Below, some houses will cut you. Depends on each specific house.

So GPA matters, but don’t let that stop you from trying to rush. If you are in STEM, try Phi Sigma Rho. They’re a PHA sorority just solely for girls in STEM so they’re probably more understanding of GPA and probably a better fit.

I am in a chapter that I joined with a 2.8 GPA. I did have a 2.5 the first time I rushed and was cut from all chapters, but know then it’s usually not personal. If you want to be in Greek life, there is probably a home for you, so if you get cut because of your low GPA, raise it and try again.
