joining a sorority

by: Aleksandra

How many ways are there to join a sorority? I know there's spring rush (formal) and informal rush in the autumn. Are there other ways to join?

There is informal (during the fall), formal (during the spring), snap bidding, & joining a new sorority (recolonizing). I do not know much about snap bidding but maybe you can contact Panhellenic about that.

Snap bidding is incredibly difficult, the sorority offers you a bid after bid day and there are usually only a few. Some sororities will hold informal in the spring after formal recruitment, but the easiest way is through formal.

So if a girl gets a snap bid, she and the rest of the PC would then know that she wasn't really a first choice for the house she got? Since it's after bid day and everything?

No, usually there are too many people to remember who was there that day and who wasn't. Plus when it's on Monday, some people can't come because of class, so no one really knows unless you tell them. That being said, no one cares if you got a snap bid because it still means the sorority liked you enough to offer you a bid.

But in general, snap bids are a long shot. Usually a few sororities can give some out, but I wouldn't count on one.

How they work is a sorority that has not yet reached quota after bids have been handed out can offer snap bids to women who went through formal recruitment until they reach quota. I believe they have 24 hours to offer and the girls have 24 hours to accept or something like that. In my experience, snap bids are generally given out to women who missed a round of recruitment for whatever reason, dropped out of recruitment before signing a bid card, or who 'suicided' a house after pref round [for the love of God, don't do that during Formal Recruitment though]. Any recruitment people out there, feel free to correct me.

No problem! The bidding process is super complicated. You can read into it a bit more on NPC's website if you're interested, but there are a lot of rules and even most members don't know all of the rules for it. But it really does try to give everyone the best chance to get into a chapter. Which is why we tell PNMs to trust the system.

You pretty much NEED to go through formal to get a snap bid. It isn't another form of recruitment.

Any informal recruitment after Fall Informal Recruitment or Spring Formal Recruitment is sort of our version of continuous open bidding. But it doesn't really exist here like it does in other schools and most chapters don't do it (because they've already hit total)

You mean there is also the option , if you fit the standards, to join a PHA associate like Phi Rho for engineers. Or sororities that are social but major specific that aren't PHA like DOK. Those two are probably the most recognized non-PHA sororities and are social, not professional. I think they do informal every semester

Th 2 affiliates are also good options! The girls in them that I know love it.

Just a side note: For any org like DOK that is non-PHA affiliated (and that is not a MCGC/NPHC sorority), you can be in both a PHA sorority and that org. I've met several girls that have been in a PHA sorority and in DOK. So don't think you're restricted in that sense.

My roommate joined Phi Rho and loved it. It seems completely like any other social sorority. ASY (the other PHA Associate) is also another good option if you're in AG, but not as involved as Phi Sigma Rho.
