rush as soph, thoughts?

by: oddseverinmyfavor?

What are my odds of getting into one of the top 5 houses (Alpha Phi, DG, Chi O, Pi Phi, KKG) as a sophomore rushing? Do they only accept freshman or sophs with high GPAs?

Your odds definitely slim when you go through recruitment with the mindset of desperately wanting to get into a "top house." Being in a soroity is so much more than the name. The girls who get the most out of greek life are the ones who go through recruitment for the right reasons. People who only care about the label end up being really disappointed in the long run. Just be yourself and you'll end up where you belong. Gpa isn't even a huge factor of getting in a house.

if thats what youre basing your rushing on you probably shouldnt: phi only does freshman, piphi is hella superficial and mostly do freshmen, dg and chi o might take you but honestly don't know why youd wanna be in those, if it were 2011 id say HELL yes but panhel and our computer systems are making every house have more diverse people soo. you have a good chance with kappa as long as you dont act as superficial as you seem based off of this q.
gpa.. for example my house has a required gpa of 3.4 and we're one of the ones you listed SOO yeah.

That's a reasonable question considering this site teaches girls they need to be in a top house. I agree with the people above and don't think you should base your rush preference cards on ranking by tier, but since many girls do I'll give you the scoop.

A Phi usually only takes freshman. Not saying that it's out of the question but I know in the past few years that has been the trend.

DG took some sophomores this year, but DG also took a bunch of weird people this year. No offense, but this year's PC just didn't seem to be their usual type.

Chi O takes sophomores, but because they got top grades last year for one term, I would expect them to be looking for girls with higher GPA's now that their house is trying to raise up to get top again.

Pi Phi would definitely accept a sophomore because they have the past few years, but the GPA thing might be an issue. Pi Phi continuously gets top grades, so they will be harsh when it comes to GPA standards.

Kappa has accepted many sophomores the past two years and doesn't usually get top grades, but that doesn't mean they won't have high GPA expectations. This years PC was really popular, so they might be more selective.

This all being said, just because those are the top 5 houses, doesn't mean the other houses are easy to get into or anything of the sort. You will find what house you fit into and hopefully you will find a new home based on that, not based on a popularity contest. Best of luck!

Unfortunately there were a chunk of upperclassmen dropped from recruitment last year but as a response PHC discussed implementing an upperclassmen quota. If you're not familiar with totals and quota basically it means there will be spots set aside specifically for upperclassmen, though no one would be obligated to use it. Not sure if they actually adopted it. Either way many upperclassmen DO find homes each year, especially if they come in with solid GPAs and can show that they're already involved on campus. Just be prepared with a good answer as to why you didn't rush as a freshman because you'll be asked a million times and remember to keep an open mind about each house. Good luck!
