freshman questions on rush, etc

by: mikmak

As an incoming freshman (girl) with no family background in Greek life, I have no idea how the rush process works or what I should be doing... Lol
Are there any specific hints or tips for rushing? (How should I dress, what happens, etc)
Should I go into rush with a sorority that I specifically want to go for or should I keep an open mind?
Are the "top tier" sororities just the most well known on campus or is there another reason for that?
Thanks for any help :)

Tiers are mostly just a way for people who still care about high school popularity to make themselves feel special. A great greek experience can be had in any tier and any house.

During recruitment orientation they'll do a presentation that tells you how to dress for each day. Basically you'll wear the t-shirt they give you for the first round, then nicer jeans/shorts/a sundress for the next two rounds, and a nice dress for the last night.

Keep an open mind. Everyone will be talking about "the best" houses but at the end of the day you're going to be spending time with these people for the next 4 years, so all that matters is who you like. You might like a top house that people tell you is full of snobs and you might like a bottom house people tell you is full of weirdos. I can't emphasize this enough: ignore literally everyone else. Just do you.

Also, keep in mind that while they're going to tell you this is a "mutual selection process" it really isn't. You'll rank which chapters you like best, but the chapters pretty much have all the power. Most people get cut from a house they like at least once during recruitment, and some get cut by a lot. Remember it only takes one to find a home.

Just be yourself and be prepared to talk about your major and hometown 50 million times. Good luck!

Excellent advice in this post. Remember that happiness is more important that some ranking on an anonymous website!
