quit and rush for another sorority?

by: ?

Okay this is super awkward to say, but I’m thinking about quitting the Panhellenic sorority that I am in rn and rushing for another MGC one... I have several solid personal reasons for that but I feel like I have already paid my initiation fee and dues for the one that I’m in rn for several semesters, and I just don’t want to pay several hundreds dollars for another one (my family are not like THAT rich). Idk... are there ppl “transferring” to another sorority at nyu? would it look bad on me?

i know people who dropped mgc and went panhel but not the other way around. idk if the mgc sorority would care but you'd certainly ruffle a lot of feathers in panhel. also unsure if mgc sororities will allow you to pledge if you already got initiated elsewhere.

lmao @ people deleting comments.

you're an adult, you should've thoroughly considered the promise you made to your organization. the entire pledge/new member process is there for you to think about whether or not you want to pledge a lifetime of sisterhood.

there are completely understandable reasons why you'd want to disaffiliate, but to drop and rush another organization after you already initiated is completely scummy. I know if I heard about someone doing it I wouldn't think highly of them at all & it would make me seriously question their morals. plus you're literally throwing away hundreds of dollars that your parents worked hard for.

life lesson: don't make commitments you can't follow through on.

^^^THIS!

I’ve never read a more perfect answer than this. Greek organization membership isn’t a “club”—it’s for LIFE! So grow the hell up and honor your commitment!

no hate on multicultural orgs, but what makes you think that joining an mgc sorority will change all the "personal reasons" you wanna leave your current sorority. surely when you went through new member period & initiation you still thought you'd be sisters with these girls for life, right? and then you changed your mind? why do you believe you won't change your mind again, or you won't encounter more "personal reasons" to leave your new sorority?

yes mgc sorority members share a cultural background but they have internal drama and issues just like every panhel sorority. if your panhel sorority is exhibiting blatant racism towards you, report it to fsl and disaffiliate, and then maybe i'd understand wanting to give mgc a try. but if you want to leave for any other problem, there is no reason why that problem won't still be present in an mgc org. honestly this sounds more like an issue with you that you need to deal with internally, not a problem that dropping and rerushing will magically solve.
