okay I just got my acceptance for NYU!!! but I already set things in motion with smu.. i’m from tx and I really want out but i know how my parents will react. a few concerns i have is I was 100% going to rush but if I changed my mind and accepted nyu I wouldn’t have any recs. I am a legacy to theta.. but I don’t know if that makes a difference. another concern i have is I wouldn’t be able to bring my new car... well I know it’s not really logical but could I? do nyu kids just not drive ever? the main things holding me back are rush, the car and of course transporting all my dorm stuff dorm texas to new york... I don’t even know where to start, I was thinking of calling monday and asking if I could defer my admission to the fall but I don’t know if they will allow that.

some nyu kids do drive it’s just driving in the city is kind of a waste cause everyone walks here and parking to sit in a lot here is expensive. a lot of kids here are from California and overseas and they buy their dorm stuff here so I wouldn’t worry about the transporting! rush is rush you will find a place here no matter what if you want to do rush.

is being a legacy not that big of a deal? also is rush in the spring? like informal, or is that something I would have to reach out to the individual chapters about?

formal sorority recruitment is in the fall (2 weekends in sep), while some sororities also do informal spring recruitment. frats all usually do fall rush and some also might do spring. legacy influence depends on the chapter, different orgs will have different policies. most people dont have legacy/rec letters, you might stand out a bit more but it's not a guaranteed bid.

as for driving, just dont. the subway's faster (no traffic) and parking is expensive/impossible to find.

- don't bring a car

thanks so much! it’s so weird because for smu everyone makes a it deal about their car and going from car to careless might be weird but i could always bring my car down in the future if after nyu lol ,another thing is i’d probably have to wait till fall to rush, will I be okay being like pretty much alone? I want to meet friends and have that sisterhood but i’m scared. smu rushes in the spring so I would get that, i’m just conflicted on what to do, I could try to defer my admission to fall but idk if nyu will let that slide... i’m going to try but I never thought i would get accepted to tisch... lol it kinda made my life get off loop

do you think it’s okay to completely just drop everything and accept nyu offer? i know it’s a lot better than smu i’m just scared of being alone lol, I know that it would be great for net working, modeling, fashion but I just feel lost

do NOT base your college decision off of greek life or how many friends you think you might make. if you do enroll in the spring, nyu makes an effort to foster a community, and almost everyone in greek life has plenty of non-greek friends--your social life is not dictated by rushing and you will NOT be "pretty much alone" if you don't rush the second you get to campus, in fact pretty much half of pnms during fall rush are sophomores/juniors. nyu greek life isn't a big deal so it's not as if it's going to be your entire social life; honestly i'm in a "top" sorority and while i love my sisters, all of my closest friends aren't greek.

the actual important things to think about when choosing the school you'll go to: how do you think you'll do in new york? it's DEFINITELY not a city that everyone can handle well, it can be exhausting and overwhelming for some. can your family comfortably support the cost of an nyu education? our financial aid is notoriously bad and an nyu degree is not worth six figures of debt, plus the cost of living in nyc is crazy high. do you plan on having a career in nyc? if you don't plan on taking internships, etc. while you're here then the cost of living might not be worth it.
