It is possible to move up. Depends on the quality of pledge classes that you bring in and whether the upper class men stay active in the house. How to gain the respect of the other fraternities is to win in intramural sports like hockey and not be afraid to throw down. The sororities have to be played by a savvy social chair. When I was at Miami, my "mid level" partied with almost every sorority including everyone of the quote top sororities.
