advice for pnm's

by:

I remember that when I rushed, I had a lot of questions about the whole process. I'm a junior in a "top" sorority (not that it matters, I just figured that someone would ask), so I've been on both sides. I just wanted to share some advice/wisdom to those of you getting ready to find your Greek home in a few weeks.

- First and perhaps most importantly, we want to impress you as much, if not more, than you want to impress us. REMEMBER THAT. We get a better pledge class if more girls want us, and we are trying our hardest to impress you, whether we think that you'll fit in or not. So don't be nervous, because we're probably more so than you.

- Rec letters and legacy status help a LITTLE bit, but they mostly serve to help you get through the first round. All sororities call girls back on a point system, and those things will be added to your prescore points along with the points you earn each round. Being a legacy does not guarantee you a spot in any sorority. If they don't like you, you won't be called back, regardless of having those things. If you don't have a rec letter or legacy status, DON'T WORRY! If they like you, they will keep calling you back.

- Try not to talk about sororities you like/don't like/are going to pref with your friends. Everyone has different tastes, and you are trying to find YOUR home for the next four years. Don't let anyone else's opinions sway you.

- In terms of physical presentation, always remember to keep it classy. If you have a different, edgier style, great! Show it. But no matter what, and this goes for all girls, KEEP IT CLASSY. Do not dress like you are going uptown to the bars. Keep your 5 inch heels and short, tight dresses at home. There is a Pinterest board that is run by Panhel that has great suggestions of the type of things you can wear to each round. Here is the link: pinterest.com/mugreeks/recruitment-things-to-think-about-and -what-to-wear/

- It is important to look clean and well kept. Shower every day, get your nails done, do your hair, etc. Think of it as a job interview. You don't have to go all out, but you want to make a good impression.

- You will be beyond exhausted each day. Please do not try to go out, and make sure you get as much sleep as you can. A lot of girls get sick during rush because they are so worn down and are around so many people. Take your vitamins and make sure you remember to eat and sleep! Maybe keep some Emergen-C in your purse. I almost dropped rush because I was so sick.

- On the topic of purses, you're going to want to keep it well stocked with things like hairspray, powder, oil blotting sheets, mascara, and anything else you feel you could need. Rush consists of 12 hour days without much time in-between parties and it will wear on you. Be prepared!

Super helpful, thank you!! How do sororities look at PNMs that have a code 105a though?

By: This is great.

Only the recruitment chairs from each chapter know the specific answer to that! I really think that you'll be fine though. I'm not even sure that sororities are told that you have any sort of violation. Don't worry, I think you'll be okay!

- BRING COMFORTABLE SHOES!!! I cannot stress this enough. You will walk miles all over campus going from party to party, and you definitely don't want to do that in heels. I suggest bringing Uggs or something to save your feet.

- Keep your schedule, book, and nametag they give you at the Recruitment kickoff with you at all times! It really helps so you know the location of the parties, your group schedule, and where each sorority will be.

- Do some research beforehand! Go to Miami's Fraternity and Sorority Life page and look at the minimum GPA's each chapter requires, their philanthropies, what they're involved in, etc. See what you're interested in! It helps to spark conversation.

- Parties are very repetitive and you will be asked the same questions a million times, like "What dorm do you live in?", "Where are you from?", "What are you involved in on campus?", and "What's your major?". Be prepared for that and try not to get too frustrated, it's our first time meeting you and we want to get to know you.

- Have fun and keep an open mind! Remember that this will be your home for the next 4 years.

HAPPY RUSH! We're so excited to meet all of you!

Some other little things-

-Remember that while you are tired at the end of it, the actives are working about twice as hard to make it perfect, so if they seem exhausted or uninterested by the end of each day it's not because they're bored with you, it's because they've literally been screaming and cheering their heads off for a week straight to make sure recruitment goes as planned.

-If you get cut from your favorite sorority, don't drop recruitment. Hearts are always broken. I cried when I got my pref list, but I stuck with it and couldn't be happier now. Even if you get your last choice, at least stay through the end of bid day and give them a chance. If you still don't like them at the end of the day, you have no obligation to stay.

-Don't be afraid to ask your GLGs for help (or I guess they're calling them Rho Gammas now). They're there to help. I accidentally went to the wrong round once on the second day and the one I was supposed to be at was on the other side of campus, so I called my GLG and she sorted it out for me.

-Please never, never be rude to the actives, even if it's at a sorority you really don't like. You don't have to rank them on your sheet, you don't have to accept a bid from them if you end up getting one. But word gets around and sororities you DO want can easily hear about it. Same goes for badmouthing sororities in round. We're all friends with each other and nobody wants a rude new member. Also, you can get kicked out of rush for rudeness.

do we really only need two "outfits" aside from the t-shirt we get for open house?

By: so
by: Sorority Girl

You need three in addition to the tshirt. You need outfits for sisterhood round, philanthropy round, and preference round.

Hey this is super informative and thank you so much for posting it! What is the "Point system" like that you mentioned in the original post? I know you might not be able to tell but I'm just curious.

By: pnm

It differentiates between sororities, but the general idea of it is that after each round is over the actives gather and rank the girls they talked to based off points and at the end of the day the points are tallied up and that's what helps decide who to ask back for the next day

Most sororities rank on a scale of 1-10. Let's say that in open house, you talk to 3 girls and one gives you a 1, one gives you a 5 and one gives you a 10, those points average out to 5.33. So, 5.33 would be added to your score. Then comes in the concept of pre-scoring. I'm not sure how all sororities do it, but in mine, you get a few points for having rec letters, being recommended by a girl in the sorority, being a legacy, etc. Lets say each of these things is worth 2 points and you have all 3 of these qualities. Your pre-score would be 6 before you even start the round. So, add those 5.33 points onto the 6 you had before rush even started and your total number of points after open house is 11.33. Sororities generally have a threshold of points that it takes to get called back, discussed, and cut. So let's say the max points someone has after a round is 30, girls from 20-30 will be called back, girls with 10-20 will be discussed, and girls with under 10 will be dropped. The points add on after each round. Most sororities have a similar system to this, even if it is not exactly how they do it.

Do you have any tips for sophomores who are rushing this year?

By: Sophomore
by: Sorority Girls

Just be yourself! I would maybe explain why you chose to rush this year. Just follow the tips above and you'll be more than fine! Tons of sophomores get bids, I wouldn't worry about it!

So for the business casual round that lasts two days, are we supposed to wear the same outfit those two days, or do we need 2 different outfits for rounds that last 2 days?

By: Outfits?
by: ddd

You only need one outfit, as long as you don't spill on it. You're going to different houses since it's still technically one round split between two days so no one will know you wore the same outfit unless you tell them. Most of the actives wear the same things both days because their outfits are round specific as well

I think the person above me was confused- you're probably talking about round 3 because it lasts both thursday and friday (pref is on saturday). You're going to different sororities both of the business casual days because they're both round 3. You can wear the same outfit if you want since no sorority is going to see you both thursday and friday.
