what's the deal with a phi

I don't understand. Have they always been towards the top, or did their last pledge class totally shoot them up to the top?
To me it seems like they were more in the same tier with DZ, but below AXO (that's just my understanding, don't freak out)?

APhi has always been pretty good, but never quite top. I think it's just their name honestly. When people think of the top, historically they think of DG, Pi Phi, Theta, AXO. That's just how it's always been. They've gotten great pledge classes the past 2 years, definitely better than AXO, but for some reason they can just never break into that upper top level. Even being better than AXO now. I think it's more old reputations than anything

It used to be Theta, DG, AXO always. Then after last year it was pretty clear that top tier because theta, dg, pi phi, axo. Then this year finally solidified alpha phi as fourth and AXO as fifth. They've dropped a level every year. The only way for that stuff to change is for one sorority to consistently do amazing and another to not do well and that is what has happened. I honestly only consider upper top to be theta and dg. Then middle top to be pi phi and alpha phi, and lower top to be axo and dz.

Pi phi was actually #1 before they were kicked off. But yeah I agree with you now that they're the top of the "middle top", but could definitely move up this year. And hopefully APhi starts getting the credit they deserve in terms of ranking. I could honestly see them move up, it's just going to take longer because they don't have that name that Theta DG Pi Phi AXO do. Great on them for making their own name for themselves, it's definitely going to pay off!
