rec letters

by:

Girls keep posting asking the same questions about rec letters, so I'm going to try and answer everything in one post. I'm in a top 3 sorority and this is how we view them, and I'm 99% sure all of the other sororities are the same way.
Rec letters don't hurt to have, BUT, they won't make or break you. The way they are used is as follows:
- They give you prescore points. AKA points you get BEFORE you rush based on your high school GPA, involvement, whether you're a legacy, etc. These total points don't amount to much in the grand scheme of things.
- During rush, your prescore is added on to after your score for each round. So you can get as many as 10 or as little as 1 point added on after each round. You need a certain amount of points to be asked back, otherwise you're cut or you're talked about if you're in the middle group. This is pretty much the ONLY time that prescores matter, because it may help you get through to the next round. If you have 10 prescore points but you suck and get 1's the rest of the time after talking to girls, you'll be cut as the rounds go on and other girls rack up higher scores. So if one girl had no prescore but got 10's the first two rounds, and you had 10 prescore points and got 1's the first two rounds, you'll get cut because you'll have a score of 12 as opposed to her 20.
- Basically, a prescore (rec letters included) can help you get through the first round but overall if you're not meant to be in that sorority, you'll get cut.

They WILL NOT make or break you. If they like you, you'll get in. If not, you will get cut, even if you have a rec letter. They're honestly not that big of a deal, so don't stress about them. I didn't have any and had my choice of a lot of good sororities.

If you girls have any more questions, feel free to ask.

my biggest question is: can an active at another school write you a rec letter or does it have to be an alumni? I know lots of girls that are in sororities at UC, OU, OSU, and UK that I like here but I don't know many alums.

So I'm a guy and when I saw "rec letters" I thought this meant girls wearing letters at the actual rec. so in regards to that, if you're hot wear letters. People notice and it helps. Wearing letters at the rec can get you tons of street cred

Honestly, don't break a sweat about rec letters. For instance, I have a ton of cousins in Kappa and so I had about a million rec letters for them and they cut me fairly early on in the process. Now I know I wouldn't have fit at all there. They help a little bit, but overall the decision process is left up to the sisters and the PNMs based on who fits where. They're kind of like legacy status in that way.

how much do act scores and high school involvement matter too? more than first semester GPA and involvement?

basically they just add to your pre score, but what matters most during rush is your appearance, personality, and quality of conversations you have with the girls rushing you. you can look great on paper but if you can't back that up with how you are in person, its useless.

and to add to my above post, first semester grades matter only to the point where they allow you to rush..i believe the requirement is a 2.7. some houses will cut anyone below a 2.8 or 3.0.

yes, GPA matters as far as requirements for rush, but it also gives the sorority something to think about. especially since many sororities have higher standards than the general rush standards. Also, some houses who are trying to bring up their average GPAs might be a little stricter for PNMs. that just depends on what they're looking for during each year's recruitment.
