rec letters

Girls keep posting asking the same questions about rec letters, so I'm going to try and answer everything in one post. I'm in a top 3 sorority and this is how we view them, and I'm 99% sure all of the other sororities are the same way.
Rec letters don't hurt to have, BUT, they won't make or break you. The way they are used is as follows:
- They give you prescore points. AKA points you get BEFORE you rush based on your high school GPA, involvement, whether you're a legacy, etc. These total points don't amount to much in the grand scheme of things.
- During rush, your prescore is added on to after your score for each round. So you can get as many as 10 or as little as 1 point added on after each round. You need a certain amount of points to be asked back, otherwise you're cut or you're talked about if you're in the middle group. This is pretty much the ONLY time that prescores matter, because it may help you get through to the next round. If you have 10 prescore points but you suck and get 1's the rest of the time after talking to girls, you'll be cut as the rounds go on and other girls rack up higher scores. So if one girl had no prescore but got 10's the first two rounds, and you had 10 prescore points and got 1's the first two rounds, you'll get cut because you'll have a score of 12 as opposed to her 20.
- Basically, a prescore (rec letters included) can help you get through the first round but overall if you're not meant to be in that sorority, you'll get cut.

Honestly, don't break a sweat about rec letters. For instance, I have a ton of cousins in Kappa and so I had about a million rec letters for them and they cut me fairly early on in the process. Now I know I wouldn't have fit at all there. They help a little bit, but overall the decision process is left up to the sisters and the PNMs based on who fits where. They're kind of like legacy status in that way.

my biggest question is: can an active at another school write you a rec letter or does it have to be an alumni? I know lots of girls that are in sororities at UC, OU, OSU, and UK that I like here but I don't know many alums.
