There are two big things that affect numbers: recruitment and retention. Some chapters are better at formal recruitment and take a large number of girls each year. DG Kappa and GPhi took the most girls over the last three years during formal recruitment.
Retention is keeping the girls you get. You’ve seen the chapter numbers so you know who is at the top, but it’s not Kappa and GPhi. When you start comparing recruitment numbers and membership DZ and Theta have great retention for strong recruiting chapters, but AOII and ChiO also have strong member retention even though they are weaker recruiting chapters. That means even though they are smaller, once a girl joins she is less likely to drop.
PhiSig is relatively less established than the other chapters at Miami, so they don’t recruit as well. The problem is that they also have a lot of drops.

Also important to explain this further. Panhel and the bid matching systerm does a really great job of making sure every chapter has a very similar number of girls in each pc on bid day, maybe off by a one or two, phi sig may be a little lower. So everyone is recruiting about the same. But girls drop right away bc they aren't happy.
So chapters like DZ Aphi Zeta Kappa and AXO will do a fast hush-hush informal bc their new pc will have friends who will jump at getting an informal bid so they can look like they have a high number still. Theta will never do informal. They aren't allowed to at Miami. Then you'll see chapters like chio gphi axid adpi kd... doing official informal trying to fill their extra bids through small events, also trying to rise their chapter total.
So chapter total is actually a combination number of formal and informal bids for basically every chapter except Theta.
The only chapter here that high has retention and does great recruiting is Theta. It's not Aphi Axo Zeta DZ... they have to informal almost every semester, they just don't have as many open bids as some of the others.
