sorority rush with a learning disability

by: headed

I'm headed to Miami next year. I have a diagnosed learning disability and will have a tutor, dragon speak and note taker in my classes etc.. Still, school, is usually hard for me. Will people discriminate against me, because of this? Should I keep it to myself and not tell anyone? Should I be really open about it? Are there other girls in sororities with learning disabilities?

Take time visit sprite dates in the fall. Also some incoming freshmen do not know about frats/sororitys that are major based. Miami has so much to offer with student organizations. You may find you like a coed chapter better than all girls. I mean this positively and keeping all options open. Too many people arrive and think there is only one way.

I doubt that anyone will discriminate against you, especially since sororities are more about a social experience and friendship base, however I would recommend you consider the time commitment of being in a sorority. If school is very challenging, it may be very difficult to balance the demands of sorority life while maintaining your grades, but I assure you that other girls with learning disabilities are in sororities, though I've not heard of anyone I know using notetakers or having those challenges--doesn't mean it's not possible though.

If I were you I would also look into academic or professional organizations as well, lots of my friends are in business fraternities/premed/psych or professional orgs like that and it is also a great social experience while having that academic focus.

I also I have a learning disability. I have severe ADHD and because of it I struggled in school as well. It isn't as intense as your issue, but I am very happy in my sorority and my sisters don't look down on me for it. During recruitment, I did not talk about my learning issue because it doesn't effect me socially.

All chapters also have study tables as well as sisters that may have taken courses that you are enrolled in to help you out. However, it is a major commitment and if you struggle a ton with school, maybe focus on that instead of a social greek organization.

I am in a sorority as a sophomore now with the same situation. I can honestly tell you, and I don't mean to be a downer, but yes, you will be discriminated against. National and sorority policies and rules don't bend for situational girls, at least not in my situation. I have been healing from a life changing event through college and have gained head injury and disabilities from it. I did bad one of the semesters and the chapter had to end up voting on expelling me from the sorority. I was not expelled bc the girls in the chapter understand. However nationals and advisors are not doing everything in their power to get me out of the sorority. Sororities can be extremely black and white and I'm not in a wheelchair so I don't have any exceptions.

I am not sure what the above poster means. Please clarify. Are you happy. Is your nationals trying to get you out? Is your disability progressive and making it hard for you? Is the life changing event what makes you disabled. I am sorry but your post is more confusing than clarifying for the original poster

Depending on your personality, you may be a great candidate for one of the top tiers. Lower tier sororities focus more on gpa when recruiting, and what you are going to do for them. Top tier sororities focus more on personality, sisterhood and looks. You'll need to maintain a minimum gpa, but your sisters will support you. Take advantage of rinella learning center and get tutors if need be. As long as you maintain the minimum, nobody in a top tier sorority will be concerned or discriminate against you. Best of luck!

I'm not sure what sorority the above poster is talking about where they tried to vote her out, but most aren't like that. My sorority has a GPA requirement and if you don't meet it, you just lose some social privileges and they make you do an "academic plan" which involves going to study tables so many times, etc. We also have sisters who volunteer to tutor others in classes they have already taken. If you're having trouble, our standards committee and academics chair are incredibly flexible and willing to work with you, you just have to keep open communication with them.

I have a neurological disorder that's invisible - you would have no idea unless I told you, but it does cause me a lot of problems. Its considered a disability. If I were going through recruitment, I personally would not want to mention it. I wouldn't be embarrassed or anything like that, but I just wouldn't want that to be the impression they have of me. I would prefer they judge me on my personality, grades, etc. If that makes sense.

sad you want people to judge you on your grades. If a person has a learning difference they shouldn't be judged on their grades. Nobody should be judged on their grades. It is a personal thing.
