frat and sorority ranks

Why is everyone so concerned with the "ranks" of frats and sororitys when all in all every year they still hang out with the same groups of other fraternities and sororities as they always have and always have the same repuatations with maybe a very slight change...
Makes absolutely no sense to me. Top is top middle is middle bottom is bottom and that's all there is to it
