quota explained please

by: confused

hi can someone please explain quota? is there a range or is it one number? I have a friend who got her second choice for bid day but her first choice sorority had fewer girls in their PC than her second choice(the one she ended up getting) can someone explain how that is? as if sororitys were trying to reach quota why wouldn't she have moved up the list on her first choice and gotten a bid from them?

it’s all based on data from years and years of recruitment. some chapters have a longer history of getting more girls back so they drop more/give less bids during recruitment bc fewer members tend to drop the chapter during the year (ex: ddd, adpi). others keep more girls during recruitment bc they tend to have more drop (ex: sk, dz).
these are also the ones you will see/not see during COB as well. usually most chapters participate in COB to reach quota, but adpi and ddd usually don’t (and didn’t last year)

Quota and total have nothing to do with how many people drop over the course of the year. Quota is simply the number of PNMs remaining at the end of pref divided by the number of chapters. Each round each chapter may invite back a different number of women because chapters have different histories of getting back the women they want each round (recruiting strength). If a chapter is more likely to get back their top 100 over another chapter, for example, they will be allowed to invite fewer women back than a chapter who needs more women to come through to get 100 (in this example).

Total on this campus is the median chapter size and is determined three days after the end of primary recruitment in the fall or one week after school starts in the spring. Chapters are allowed to COB until they reach total (NOT quota). Once they reach total, they can no longer COB.

Notice how quota and total are different. A chapter can reach quota during primary recruitment and still be able to COB because they are below total. Often that is because members drop out over the course of the year causing the chapter size to drop, but it can sometimes happen with new chapters who are trying to build chapter size over time.

Quota will be the same for all chapters, unlike the number each chapter is allowed to invite back between rounds. Some chapters will end up with a number higher than quota due to quota additions, which is explained below. However, without quota additions, everyone is allowed to extend bids to the same number of women -- that is quota.

Quota is basically all the people left in rush at the end of pref divided by the number of chapters.

The reason your friend got her second choice over her first is because her second choice had her ranked higher on their bid list than her first choice. So she ended up matching with her second choice before her first choice. If she were higher on the first choice's list, she would have ended up there. The first house likely filled all their slots before they reached your friend's name. I suspect the second choice had more quota additions compared to the first house, which would have given them a number of new members higher than the stated quota. That happens because PNMs are told that if they maximize their options and rank all the sororities they saw at pref, they will get a bid. So basically you will end up with a bid to one of your pref houses, even if you are ranked lower on the house's bid list.

If you look, there is a good explanation on the Sororities reddit which explains RFM (Release Figures Methodology -- the process which matches are made). You can also look on the National Panhellenic Conference website since they are the people who oversee RFM at all schools which have NPC sororities/recruitment.

Quota Plus. Quota is the same for all sororities but some take more than quota due to quota plus. Pnm's who ranked all their pref houses will get a bid even when it puts a house over quota. Those who SIP may not get a bid.

Which house a quota addition goes to depends on how many active members each house already has, where the house ranked the pnm on their list, and where the pnm ranked that house. Your friend's PC is larger because it took more quota additions than the other.

This happened to me this year, and not only was I extremely shocked and sad when I didn't get my top house, but the girls I spoke to during my parties in that house reached out to me on Bid day and expressed their own shock and disappointment over the results. We have all hung out since and are good friends. I go to just about all of their functions and even decided to drop the chapter I received in hopes of rushing again next Fall to actually run to the chapter I consider home. I know it has been a year since this was posted, but I hope your friend is happy with the decision she made in the end :)
