growing pnm numbers, maybe time for new sorority?

by: startanewsorority

Hey everyone!I don’t know about you but I feel that as our school gets larger, the availability to find your perfect home in a sorority gets smaller. While yes the system does work, it doesn’t provide everyone with what they know and feel is their home. I believe that we should see if the school is open to expansion so that way more girls will be able to find their forever home. Schools smaller than us(University of Alabama for example) still have more sororities on campus. I just went through recruitment and unfortunately was called one hour before bid day start saying I was dropped after doing a suicide bid. While I was offer a snap bid, it was not a House I felt I belonged. If anyone else feels the way I do please comment below and perhaps we can arrange a meeting with the activities director and go from there!

This is the most stupid post I’ve read.

Not only does our Greek system have a very diverse array of sororities, we JUST added ZTA to our campus a few years ago. Not only that, our houses are struggling with numbers as it is. Rather than add another house, we should be taking larger pledge classes, but unfortunately we are unable to due to the large amount of girls who drop out of recruitment, as they did this year. In recent years houses are taking pledge classes of around 35, when in past years the pledge classes have been well over 50. Aopi and zta are struggling with reaching quota as it is and adding another house would be damaging to our existing chapters.

It’s your fault for doing a suicide bid and not getting in. Don’t blame your mistake on our Greek system. We are fine as is.

I’m not blaming my suicide bid on the Greek system. I like the way it works I just believe that we should have more options. I know many girls felt certain sororities did not fit their values and the ones that did dropped them. They stuck it out as long as they could but why go into a house you know you don’t fit into? One that you couldn’t keep a conversation with any of the new members, and just felt it was forced. And that is coming from a multitude of girls I spoke to, not just my opinion. Many sororities are already at quota and can’t even open up for spring recruitment unless someone quits or goes alumn. By opening a new sorority it will give more girls a reason to rush because their are more options for them.

@startanewsorority-First of all, I'm sorry that your recruitment experience here at LBSU did not find you what you believe would be your "perfect home." Relationships and friendships take time and work so I'm sorry that you made the decision to "suicide" and decline your snap bid. The group that extended a snap bid to you did see you worthy to be a new member. While it is true that most will not be eligible for spring recruitment due to their total numbers, hopefully a group that you were considering will be holding spring recruitment.

I have to agree with @?'s explanation that our current chapters do fit the needs of the campus by providing a diverse array of Greek life organizations at LBSU. Perhaps permitting groups to take a larger new member class should be considered as well though the new member classes are likely being held at the mid-thirty number to allow the groups who have traditionally struggled to try and meet quota. Also Greek Life at LBSU should not be compared to a SEC (South Eastern Conference) school like Alabama. While they do have a smaller campus population, Greek Life there has always had a significant presence at that campus with strong alumni support unlike LBSU.

I hate to disappoint you but at this point in time, LBSU and our campus Panhellenic is not likely to be open to new groups to colonize. With Sigma Kappa returning in the mid-1980's and Zeta Tau Alpha's recent return, there are now eight Panhellenic groups on campus. National Panhellenic is not likely to consider this campus to be "Greek Life friendly" and ready to take on another new group considering that ZTA has only returned in recent years. NPC groups have to look for campuses that are open to new colonies and then must invest heavily in them to ensure success.

Finally keep in mind that while you can't change a NPC group's fixed items: philanthropy, colors, symbols etc...you can have a positive impact on the group's culture. By joining a group that considered you worthy for a bid, you can be a force for change with like minded members.

In closing, good luck to you and I hope that in the future you will find a "perfect home."
