i went greek to separate myself from underacheiver
by: being greekI don't know if anyone noticed, but I feel like there's more students on campus this year. I hate the fact that President Conoley believes that everyone should be admitted into this school. It's really devaluing my degree. Long Beach admits a majority of students with very low GPAs and reject those with 4.0s. I joined Greek life because I want to be that 15% that wants to actually be involved on campus. A lot of these students with low GPAs are going to this college because they simply "have to" in order to get a job. This school shouldn't be a commuter school when we have national attention. We should accept the best and brightest students. Also, according to College Board, about 60% of students don't graduate within 4 years because of overcrowding. This is the reason why I joined Greek Life to separate myself from the disaster that President Conoley has created

I don't understand why long beach rejects 4.0s. They used to accept everyone back then, but nowadays its different. We should really accept the best and the brightest because Long Beach has the potential to be a household name. I also think that a majority of students who come form the greater Los Angeles Area and South Bay should go to Cal State LA or Cal State Dominguez. Those two schools really need students

This is how the Cal State System works. They want to provide a quality education to ALL people, which isn't cutting it these days because of competition. Long Beach is still stuck in the 1980s and 1990s. The mentality of President Conoley is straight up stupid. Cal States are built for local students. Long Beach isn't improving it's academics by letting in people with 2.0s. Isn't every colleges goal to accept the brightest students? If you say no, then you are ignorant

A Cal State University is NOT just for local students. Some of you are confusing this with a junior college like Long Beach City is designed to meet the needs of the local population.
Students from Orange County, the South Bay, the San Fernando Valley, the rest of California and the nation should not be excluded due to their zip code if they have the GPA and test scores to qualify for admission.

The amount of xenophobia exemplified in this thread is disturbing. And the majority of information espoused is blatantly wrong. The average GPA of incoming freshmen is 3.5; such a statistic would be impossible to render if the vast amount of students accepted maintained 2.0 GPA's.

Why would someone go to a low ranked school when they don't have to? And secondly why should they go to those schools just because they're closer to them?
