great sororities but top 3 are aphi, dz and gphib

by: X

All the sororities at this school are thriving and great groups of women. But just so we are clear; the top three without a doubt are: Alpha Phi, Delta Zeta and Gamma Phi Beta. They have been the top for 50 years and that has not changed.
All the others are great too. But the top three legacy houses are what they are.

UMMMM how can Gamma Phi Beta be "top for 50 years" when they haven't even been on campus for 50 years? You might want to ask some of their older alumni what their history was at CSULB. Trust me they were not top in the early 1980's when my aunt was in a sorority at CSULB. They've come a long, long, long way from the early 1980's when they couldn't make quota.
According to my aunt:
Alpha Phi has consistently been a top house since they were chartered.
Delta Zeta has been middle to top for 50 years.
Tri-Delta has moved from top to middle.
DG has moved up and down top to middle.
AOPi-Has stayed the same.
Sigma Kappa and ZTA-Had to close their chapters in the 1970's due to declining numbers and then wait to recolonize.

Okay just checked and GPHi has been around for 50 years. But no way no how have they always been top. Glad to see that they were able to finally turn it around in the late 1980s.
Oldest chapters at CSULB that have been in continual existence: 1950's:Alpha Phi, Delta Zeta, Tri-Delta, Delta Gamma
1960's: Gamma Phi Beta, AOPi

I think that Delta Zeta was the first sorority here at Long Beach. Not completely sure, but I'm pretty sure.

Alpha Phi went on in 1956. So 60 years ago now. When did the others go on. I think DZ was a couple of years ahead of us, not sure.

I work with two women that were here in the late 80s/early 90s, and I know a man that was a Sigma Chi here around that same time. They all agree that the top three during that time were Alpha Phi, DZ and Gamma Phi Beta. The women said those were the three most wanted during rush and had the strongest reputations.

I'm sure tri delta has never been anywhere near a top house here. I have a bunch of family members from different fraternities that have been here since the 60s all the way through. Tri Delta was a low middle house forever and now they are just low. They were never top or even high middle. Nice girls but have always kind of struggles a little.

Yes by the late 80's and early 90's GPhi had improved greatly. However a decade earlier they were the struggling house that could not make quota. Their composites from the early 80's would feature a small chapter. Their national worked with them to help them improve. My neighbor was a GPhi from those early 80's. Her daughter was a legacy and was not taken by the current chapter. She told me the same thing my aunt shared with me.

I really doubt that DG was ever top. They have been lower mid for a really long time. They did a little better this year and might now be solid mid. But they have never been a top house.

According to CSULB alumni that I've spoken to who were involved as Panhellenic rush counselors, apparently DG was one of the top sororities back in the early 80's. They said that APhi/DDD/DG were that top choices for women going through rush back then. DZ was a solid middle with AOPi and GPhi being less popular.

Is this a joke? Dude, Gphi is so not top. They are as bottom as bottom can get.

Such a joke. Aphi and dz are for sure too but I would classify gphi as a true middle house after the last two recruitments and their behavior the last 3 years.

G Phi is now middle tier due to the women they recruit and the way they act.

Tri Delta was one of the top houses when it was chartered and
remained so all during the 60's at least. Them and Alpha Phi were
considered the top sororities. Even after Delta Gamma came on Tri Delt
and Alpha Phi were the top TWO.

Nope. Sorry. Your information is wrong. DDD was mid for a short while. But they have been lower mid for the majority of the time. Now they are lower tier.

I'm not sure when you are referring to, because I know they weren't very good in the early 80s. Both my parents were here then. But really nobody cares. They are struggling now. And I don't think they own their house.

DDD was apparently a strong house in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's, but your parents are right that they began to struggle in the 1980's.

All of these "rankings" are fluid and have changed over the decades in more than one case. Sororities that used to do very well at recruitment have had years in which they have struggled for any number of reasons:Lack on interest in the Greek system, higher dues than other groups which excludes pnms, poor new member classes and other internal issues.
On the other hand there are sororities that were once doing poorly at recruitment have rebounded to become strong houses at CSULB because their nationals have invested time, money and talent into strengthening their members. They've attracted new members and improved their situation.

First of all. All the sororities here really are good. You can't go wrong. But I do agree with the person who stated that Alpha Phi and Delta Zeta have been consistently good for 60 years. I don't know of anytime that they have struggled. I think those are the two most solid houses here.
