sorority recruitment

by:

I'm going to be a freshman and looking into rushing fall of 2016. What are the time commitments? Is is inappropriate to ask about the financial aspects during recruitment? I can't seem to find that online and have a heavy cours-load my first semester. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Expect to have one night a week dedicated for new member and chapter meetings. Typically that is on a Monday night. You will have philanthropy, new member education and social obligations. New members often have designated study hours that they must meet as well.

As for the financial aspects ie: dues, you will receive information about that during recruitment information night.

Good luck!

This is a hard one, because there is a lot of time commitment in the beginning. It isn't just Monday night meetings. You have philanthropy hours, parties (not mandatory , but why join if you aren't going to go?) Personally, if I really wanted to join, i would lighten up my load and drop a class, or swap it out for any easier class. You don't want to end up on academic probation first semester.

You could wait until Spring to rush, but not all the sororities are open during Spring rush.

Also, as far as the dues. You won't be the only one wondering how expensive it is. But I wouldn't come straight out an ask right on the rush floor. They should give you something a head of time telling you how much each sorority cost. I would plan on about $1,000 the first year. Most of the initiation expenses are the first semester.

I hope this helps.

@honestly Thank you for an honest answer. I'm not in the position to pick a lot of "easier" classes because I have credit from AP classes. (in the least pretentious way possible) Which sororities rush in the fall exclusively?

All the sororities rush in the fall. If you want to meet all eight sororities, you must rush in the fall.

In the Spring only the sororities who need members will rush.

That is usually AOPI, DG and SK.

I would say $1,000 the first semester. There are a lot of upfront costs.

Unless you are a super academic person, I wouldn't take an intense load my first semester rather you join a sorority or not. First semester is a major adjustment in so many ways. I would take easier and a little fewer classes the first semester.

I don't have many classes to choose from in my major, but I have heard that many sororities have mandatory study hours... Is this true for LBSU as well?

Welcome to Long Beach. This is a great school and you will be really happy here.

Why such a heavy course load your first semester? I understand wanting to get out in four year, but heavy course load first semester can be rough.

You will be in a new living situation. Learning to navigate study times, where to study, how to study for various profs etc, can be really challenging.

I agree with the people above, that state to take an easier load.

Maybe try to take one or two heavy classes and two light classes that you know you can do well at.

This is a hard school. This isn't a private school where we pay the professors to tell us we are brilliant. You have to do well to get good grades here unless you are a communications, rec and leisure, or criminal justice major....then, it is super easy.

I do suggest joining a Greek organization. But do realize that even the academically inclined groups will be times consuming. The most academic sororities are generally ; Delta Zeta, Alpha Omicron Pi, Delta Delta Delta Delta (tridelt) and Delta Gamma. Some people say Zeta Tau Alpha has a lot of nursing majors, so they might be a good group too.

Good luck.

I am coming in with about 20 units/credits from AP classes in high school so I don't have much wiggle-room in my choice of classes. I am also in pre-nursing. As of right now I am set to apply to nursing and start taking classes in NSRG the first semester of my sophomore year (if i get in) I really want to become a part of Greek life, but my studies are fairly intensive for a first-semester freshman and I don't want to take on too much. Thank you! I will most likely go through recruitment and see if/who I click most with.

Honesty, there are a few massive party houses that you should probably avoid. Really just one. I'm not going to say the name, because you will probably figure it out.

I will say it since the person above me won't. Gamma Phi Beta, Sigma Kappa and Alpha Phi aren't really known for their studious members. I don't care what their GPA is or isn't. They are not studious groups. Stick with the other five houses and you should be fine.

The actives are going to bring up the topic of majors during recruitment so it's fine to ask if there are other nursing majors in those groups and if PNMs (potential new members) have mandated study hours.

In the end it is about who you click with so if you go in with that in mind you should do well. Good luck!

yeah but, those mandated study hours are a joke. people just sit in the library and gossip. if someone is a pre nursing major, they are going to have to be really disciplined to get through it all. it isn't impossible, but it is difficult. Most of the sororities have nursing or pre nursing majors, so she won't be the only one. but it is a full on load.

the more academicallyy inclined sororities are AOPi, DZ, ZTA, Tri delta and DG.

I perceive GPhiB and Sigma Kappa to be the least academic of the sororities, but I'm sure they have a few academic people.

It is easy when you join a sorority to dive in head first. With a difficult major, you will need to pace yourself. Maybe don't run for an office right away. Maybe be one of the more chill members.

Hope it works out.

Long Beach State Greek System has two souls when it comes to academics.

There is the party group here. They tend to be communications majors, criminal justice majors, and recreation majors. You will meet a lot of them, and they are legitimately nice people who are fun as heck.

There is a very academic element within the Greek System, and you will find that too. There are a lot of intense internships to be had in the area, and CSULB Greeks often get them. But CSLUB is a top notch school in most areas. This is not a school where you can pay your professors to tell you you are brilliant. You want good grades, you must earn them. You can be in a sorority and get good grades. But you will probably have sisters who are communications or liberal studies majors, who can study one tenth wha you study and still get better grades - because you have a hard major- they don't. This can be frustrating. You must stay focused.

I personally don't believe that the house with the highest GPA means that it is the smartest or most academic house. It often means it has a lot of communications or other easy majors. So go where you feel comfortable and stay focused

Thank you to everyone for their input. I will keep all these things in mind, but want to see if i mesh well with a group of girls. If anyone else has comments to add, it's been really helpful so far!
