Depends on the fraternity and how many members will be graduating.

Is there a limit to how many Members a fraternity can have at Cal poly? And who determines that number?

Top houses don’t have a minimum or maximum amount of bids, they have a certain amount in mind depending on graduation rates, etc.
As an extreme example Delta Upsilon the #1 fraternity has more rushees than all other fraternities combined. They normally have over 1500 passing though rush. Out of the 1500 they plan on probably bidding 40-50 If there are 70 exceptional guys they might go ahead and bid 70 but if there are only 35 guys that meet their standards they may pass on the other 1465 to be fought over by fraternities like Lambda Chi, Delta Chi and other less selective fraternities.

I'm pretty sure this year 1100 guys signed up for rush (and that was a record). Also DU is not the #1 fraternity

^^^^Freshman actually DU IS the #1 fraternity and they keep that status by ignoring geeds like you during rush. You sound like you might be a good fit in the band fraternity or try one of the new “colonies” they are not as selective as most fraternities.

So if there’s 15 active Greek fraternities on campus , and 1100 guys rushed,, and houses take only 30 guys each, then only about 40%of guys who rushed got a bid. Is that how it usually works? Or was this just a hyper competitive year because of the oversized freshman class?

It should have resulted in large pledge classes for all of the fraternities. That is a large number of rushees----and there is no quota
restrictions for fraternities.

So what happened? Why didn’t the houses all take larger pledge classes? I mean I understand not letting in tons of new guys but why wouldn’t pledge classes have been more like 40 or 50? Like at the sororities?

It was a pretty competitive year to rush as a guy so it was just bad luck. Historically fraternities do not bid as much as sororities so their houses are smaller. It sucks for this year for 2021 and winter will probably be competitive too.
