sorority expansion

by:

Obviously the chapter advisors decided against opening for expansion right now. I think it will happen sometime soon though and when it does, who do you want to see on campus?

It's most likely going to be KD. Possibly Tri Delt.

I would personally like to see Kappa or Theta though.

Kappa delta and Pi Beta Phi presented along with Alpha Phi last time. I'd like to see Kappa or Delta Zeta.

Sigma Kappa or Gamma Phi Beta would be good additions. After them, DZ or AOII.

And last time, Alpha Phi, Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Zeta, Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi and Sigma Delta Tau submitted packets of interest, then yes Pi Phi, Alpha Phi and KD were selected to present.

I think Chi Omega, and Kappa Kappa Gamma are too big nationally for our campus

Big sororities are a good thing. That makes our greek life more relevant. ChiO and Kappa would be great additions, but KD would be good too.

The addition of any more random sororities would be bad for greek life at Tech because one of the main reasons to join is the national network.

What do you mean too big nationally? I think zeta, aphi and adpi have more chapters than kkg.

SK, Gamma Phi and DZ are all on par size wise with the chapters we have now. I'm not saying bring Sigma Delta Tau or Theta Phi Alpha or Alpha Sigma Alpha or anything, I just think that a name like KKG or ChiO that everyone knows, that has a powerhouse national could put current chapters at a disadvantage.

I don't think it would put current chapters at a disadvantage. Reputations change from campus to campus. A new chapter would start out at the bottom regardless of "national rep" if that's such a thing. All the "top tier" material girls rushing would have already joined the top chapters on campus. You don't join for national rep, you join based on what campus chapter you fit with.

True. I think that's a good point.

I think we need more big names in our campus and we have to start somewhere. Really there should be more than one sorority added because women's houses are outnumbering men's houses about 2:1

just because there are more fraternities than sororities doesn't mean that multiple sororities need to be added. That's not how sorority expansion works. There has to be need on campus for another group, which there is (somewhat) because sororities are getting too big. There's too many members in each house to accommodate. BUT, that being said, this has been a bad year. A LOT of groups have had girls drop because a lot of girls this year were wishy-washy about joining a group and just wanted to try it out. So, not only does there need to be need to expand, you have to make sure a new group can survive and grow, before the nationals invest all the money in a colony.

Sorority expansion is MUCH MUCH more expensive than fraternity expansion, especially when securing equivalent facilities are in the mix, like they are at Tech, because no new sorority would survive without a house.

So when is this happening?

By: Expansion
by: re:

No idea. Heard we might be interested in opening for expansion (again) but I think it will probably be a slow process. Total/quota have grown but somewhat slowly. I think with Common App and more and more girls coming to Tech the numbers will continue to grow faster. And there is space available for several more greek houses. If you look up Hug & Associates (who is doing Alpha Phi's house if they ever start building), they also did a Georgia Tech site inspection and have plans for other houses up on their website.

My prediction? At least within 5 years, but I would guess closer to 1-2 years
